ROOT: So much to be thankful for ...

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — I assume that it is customary to write a column about what I am thankful for at this festive time of the year, so I will.

I am thankful that I don’t work at Wal-Mart. There, I said it. I like my Thanksgivings at home and I don’t like being told that if I don’t work on Thanksgiving, I lose my job.

I don’t understand it. When emergency responders follow their career paths, they understand that there will be a lot of holidays away from home, and I respect and appreciate each one of those folks. But this thing with working retail on Thanksgiving is nuts.

I am thankful that I remember it’s Thanksgiving, not “the Thursday before Black Friday.”

I am thankful, as always, for the Union-Sun & Journal allowing me to vent. It gets me in a bit of trouble sometimes, so I can only imagine the flack they put up with when I really hit a nerve. I am especially thankful that I’m not required to list my phone number in this column.

I am thankful for people in our community like Pete Robinson and Mollie Roland who care enough to do things that help others and bring some positive attention to our area.

I am thankful for my healthy grandson and my entire family. Not a day goes by that I don’t think of where I might be without my wife and my kids. After getting things so wrong for the first part of my life, it is nice to know that I could eventually get it right.

I am thankful for the new roof on my house. As I sit here and listen to the wind rattle my windows, and read the threats of eight inches of snow headed our way, I have one less terrible thing to worry about.
