LETTER: Candidate for council

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — As a lifelong resident of the City of Lockport I am once again running for alderman, this time in the 5th ward. Elections come, elections go, promises are made but few are kept. I have been approached by my fellow citizens to consider becoming active in the political arena and after some serious consideration I’m doing just that. I am concerned, we need to act, we need to voice our concerns and we need to do it now. We can no longer sit back and do nothing.

It’s time for discussion and debate and in some cases we must say no. The city has a history of giving out money to new businesses that never materialize, yet they fail to recognize and support existing local business people. While the Flight of Five is a hot topic right now, the continuing maintenance will be a burden on the taxpayers. Whether it’s financed by the state or the city, it’s still our tax money. Another cost we should be looking at is the summer concerts. Let’s take a look at a neighboring community, North Tonawanda. When they had the same concert series it didn’t cost them anything. The concert promoter paid for security and cleanup, unlike Lockport which pays upwards of $125,000 per year. That money could be better spent taking care of our streets, water lines and trees, which should be a priority and is a lasting impression on our tourists.

The Town of Lockport uses the Niagara County Water District; if the city did the same through a very simple change we could save a lot of money. The way we get our water right now causes us to pay taxes to every municipality that the water passes through.

The proposed ice arena could be a great project if done right with private money. Hopefully it will bring people that will spend a weekend, not just a few hours.

I merely point these out as examples of actions that could take place in our fine community if we are open minded and willing to cooperate with each other. We need standing room only crowds at public meetings of our elected officials. We should remind them of what they promised and what they are regrettably forgetting.
