LETTER: Questioning name change

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — This letter is in response to the plan to rename North Park School.

I am a homeowner and property tax payer in Lockport (since 1958) and have never complained about how my tax dollars are spent. I do take issue with this name change.

Schools have been closed in Lockport recently with another one closing at the end of this school year. I thought doing that was to make the school district run more efficiently. Why should you use school tax dollars to pay for a name change? Please do not tell me that there is no cost, because any name change costs money. Why does every school, except the high school, have to be named for someone? North Park is aptly named because of its location: The north side of town and near Outwater Park, one of the oldest and most beautiful parks in the city.

If this plan continues, I hope the final decision is not made by a committee but by vote of the taxpayers.
