LETTER: Keep landfill open

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Niagara County Refuse Committee Chairman Mike Hill will have to make some tough decisions soon. Interim Refuse Director Dawn Timm has recently revealed her calculations that the C&D Landfill is losing money. In March, the committee voted to close the landfill on Saturdays in winter months because of a $70 shortfall to cover wage on those days.

In the Town of Hartland, if your home is worth $100,000, you pay $10 a year for the refuse district. But this also includes the costs for the three contaminated landfills Niagara County taxpayers will have to maintain forever. So for $10 a year, the county will provide small businesses and homeowners a place to get rid of construction and demolition wastes that are part of maintaining and improving our homes. For many years rural areas like Hartland were places that roofing shingles, broken concrete, etc. was being dumped into fields an orchards. The C&D Landfill is very affordable to take this stuff to. A fried of mine just took a pickup load of shingles there and i only costs $20 to get rid of it. Modern Disposal charges a minimum of 4100.

Mike Hill needs to listen to business people and residents that need this service and keep the C&D Landfill open. We are giving millions of dollars in tax breaks to Yahoo for who knows what, and we can’t keep providing this service to our residents for about $10 a year?
