HILTS: Waterfowl opener still brings thrills
As we stood on the dike in the Tonawanda State Wildlife Management Area, we could hear ducks whistle overhead and splash into the swamp next to us. Randy Tyrrell of North Tonawanda performed extensive scouting the week before because he was drawn for one of the permits for opening day.

Local anglers, especially members of the charter fishing fraternity, are still raising questions or scratching their heads on how the new Personal Flotation Device navigation law is going to work.

FISH FORECAST: Salmon action's hot in Lower Niagara
Action on 18 Mile Creek and at Burt Dam has been hopping the past week as a large influx of salmon and trout have made it up from Lake Ontario. Wes Walker at The Slipper Sinker reports that good numbers of salmon and trout — browns and steelhead — are being caught at Burt Dam, in the creek and off the piers.
