BLOTTER: Police reports published May 3

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal

Town of Lockport

• VANDALISM: Felicia McDowell, 16, 5793 Sweetwood Drive, Apt. B, was charged Thursday with fourth-degree criminal mischief. McDowell allegedly threw a TV remote at the wall, causing it to break. The remote is worth $50. She was held in lieu of $500 bail.

Newfane

• FRAUD: A Lake Road man reported Thursday that he received a call from a man named Gordon in Albany who said he’d won a sweepstakes and in order to claim his prize, he needed to send $5,000 in processing fees. The man said he went to Wal-Mart to take out a money order, but the Wal-Mart staff convinced him not to. Gordon later called back and began lowering the processing fees, first to $3,500 and $2,700, but the man refused and told Gordon to stop calling. Several hours later, someone called the man claiming to be from the FBI, threatening to send him to jail because he had not paid his taxes on his contest winnings. The caller became angry, and the man hung up and called 911.

• CAR FIRE: The Olcott Volunteer Fire Company responded to a garage on Lake Road to extinguish a car that had caught fire. A Harvey Street man told deputies he had been removing the motor from the car with a welder when a spark started the vehicle on fire. The car was to be used as scrap, so damage was minimal.

Wilson

• ARSON: An employee at Our Lady of the Rosary on Lake Street reported Thursday morning that sometime since April 27, someone lit several candles on top of a plastic container in the church assembly room. The candles were placed on their sides, and though they burned themselves out, they melted some of the plastic on the container. Damage was estimated at $55.
