ENDANGERMENT: Norma J. Ryan, 62, 245 Windermere Drive, Lockport was charged at 2:50 p.m. Thursday with endangering the welfare of a child. Patrol responded to Big Lots, 5897 South Transit Road for a report of a toddler left in a vehicle unattended. Upon arrival deputies located the vehicle with a very young girl in the back seat coloring. According to the report, the child said she was 3 years old. After some coaching, she was able to open the door for patrol. The girl was OK and said she thought her grandmother had gone in the store. An off duty special deputy was in the parking lot and offered assistance. He stayed with the child while patrol went into the store to locate the owner of the vehicle. The deputy went to the service desk and asked staff to page the owner of the black Saturn SUV. A female checking out, later identified as Ryan, looked at the deputy with a panicked look and quickly ran out of the store.The deputy followed her as she went to the black Saturn and then confronted her about leaving the child alone in the vehicle. Ryan allegedly stated she only ran in the store for a minute and the child was tired and did not want to go in. The child informed patrol she had been sleeping and when she woke up she was scared and screamed for her grandma but she was not there. Dispatch records indicate the call was dispatched at 2:29 p.m. and patrol arrived at 2:45 p.m. and was on location with the child for five minutes before locating Ryan. The child was left alone in the vehicle for at least 20 mins. Ryan was taken into custody for endangering the welfare of a child and released with an appearance ticket.
