WHAT'S YOUR PROBLEM: Wrecked barn poses possible danger

By Bill Wolcott/wolcottb@gnnewspaper.com

WILSON The dilapidated barn at the corner of Cottage and Chestnut Ridge roads is an eyesore and could be dangerous, according to a town resident who feels it should be cleared.

“My concerns are that some day this barn is going to fall/slide right off its cracked foundation and into the nearby road,” Shelly Ayers wrote. “School buses travel this road every day and I would not want to see anyone hurt, but if something is not done about this, that is going to become a serious possibility.”

Thomas Arlington, the Royalton building inspector and assessor, agrees.

Arlington took note of the building a few weeks ago and on Feb. 14, he sent out a notice to owner Tammy Reger.

Reger previously did substantial work on apartments next to the barn and started to take the barn apart but never finished the job, Arlington said. The problem has existed for some time, he added.

“The barn is very unsteady, smells terrible, and God only knows what is crawling around inside that thing,” Ayers wrote. The barn had been used to house horses and chickens.

There are some nice homes in the area and the barn is very close to one that was recently remodeled.

“I am really surprised that the town has let this stay this way for so long,” Ayers asserted.

Reger could not be found to comment on the state of her property.

Arlington said he hopes to get voluntary compliance from Reger and will give her a “reasonable” amount of time to finish clearing the barn.

“Hopefully they will get it taken care of,” he said.
