SLIDE SHOW: Rain, snow melt lead to some local flooding

Higher-than-normal temperatures and rain led to some flooding locally Monday, as a drainage pipe along Amy Lane shows. Rapids Fire Chief Barry Kobrin said normally the flow is about as wide as the pipe, but instead has reached the backyards of some homes on Amy Lane. As rain and melting snow feed waterways across the region, some areas, especially near the Buffalo and Allegheny rivers, were subject to greater flooding threats, although most weather alerts ended by Monday evening. For today, the National Weather Service is calling for a more wintry forecast, with a chance of snow shower and a high near 32. Winds will be between 18 and 23 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph, according to the weather service.

SLIDE SHOW: Wintry winds whip through area

Motorists along Main Street negotiated big puddles while ominous clouds hovered over the area. The winds were howling Wednesday as the first big shot of winter weather hit the area. Rain and wind continued throughout the day in much of eastern Niagara County, turning mostly to snow around 9 p.m. in the city. Wind gusts were heavy Wednesday night, and a snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches was forecast overnight, according to the National Weather Service. Conditions were more problematic in traditional snow belt areas of Western New York, as a Lake Effect Snow Advisory continued. Snow showers are likely again this morning, with high winds again in the picture.JOE EBERLE/STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER

SLIDE SHOW: Genesee neighbors open Memorial Garden

IT’S OFFICIAL: Project Co-chair Gerry DeAngelo, left and Common Council President John Lombardi III cut the ribbon Thursday to mark the opening of the new Memorial Garden at 169 Genesee St. Gerry DeAngelo, her daughters and residents in the United Neighborhood Watch Group of Lockport came together in a year-long project to create the garden on a formerly run-down property. The garden is dedicated to the late Pete DeAngelo and other families’ loved ones. The project started when the city loaned the group a vacant lot on Genesee Street in an area where neighborhood deterioration was becoming evident. The group said the idea was to set an example in a failing city block with the hope of turning it around. JOE EBERLE/STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER
