HS ROUNDUP: Three hat tricks spark lacrosse Lions

Staff Reports

Nick Ciemny, Dan Stephan and Glenn McKeever each had three-goal hat tricks on Thursday, leading the host Lockport Lions over Jamestown, 13-4, in a huge Section VI, Class A victory.

Ciemny added five assists, while Stephan had four helpers.

Derek Rocco, Adam Braunbach, Joe Rinaldo and Dan Kremer all had single goals for Lockport (4-7 overall, 2-5 Class A).

Boys Tennis

Wilson 5, Roy-Hart .5

Tim Carroll, Caleb Rohring and Kyle Bogdan along with Wilson’s top two doubles teams of Jon Shafer and Jake Rohring along with Dan Reubens and Jordan Kam dropped a combined three points as the Lakemen remained unbeaten in the Niagara-Orleans League at 9-0.

Melissa Reinaeke and Conner Callaghan won at third singles for the Rams (0-9 N-O).

Niagara Falls 4, Ken East 1

The Falls’ doubles teams of Eric Spanbauer and Josh Carey along with Mike Ciraolo and Cameron Fitch were dominant as the Wolverines improved to 6-2 in the Niagara Frontier League at Hyde Park. Bryan Papaj won at first singles for East (2-7).

N-W 3, Grand Island 2

Josh Luzak’s tight win at first singles was the difference as the Falcons moved to 5-5 in the NFL. Bryan Minnicucci and Sam LeBold won a three-setter at first doubles for N-W, while Mike Mucci got a big win at third singles for GI (1-8).

Ken West 5, NT 0

Andre Pozantidis continued his dominance at first singles as the Blue Devils moved to 11-0 in the NFL. West’s Rob Batcho topped NT seventh-grader John LeMar at third singles. NT fell to 2-7.

Tonawanda 5, Cleve. Hill 0

Josh Choate didn’t drop a point at second singles and Thomas Karanas continued his strong play No. 1 singles as the Warriors improved to 7-4 in ECIC IV. The Golden Eagles fell to 2-9.



Softball

Lew-Port 5, Lockport 1

Carly Knight tossed a complete game, allowing six hits and striking out eight as the Lancers won in NFL action

Megan Cuda was 2-for-4 at the plate and made sevearl key stops at shortstop to preserve the win for Lew-Port (4-10 overall, 2-6 NFL).

Chelsea O’Laughlin had an RBI double and scored a run in the win.

Jenna Harrington was 2-for-4 with a triple and scored the lone run for the Lady Lions (0-9 NFL).

Barker 15, CSAT 1

Caitlyn Moore pitched a three-hitter with nine strikeouts to lead Barker convincing N-O win.

RBI doubles by Eileen Hinton and Jesse Wolski highlighted the offense for the Lady Raiders (4-5 N-O).

CSAT remains winless in the league at 0-7.

Grand Island 7, Ken West 5

Alex Peters’ three-run triple keyed GI’s five-run first.

West (6-2 NFL) squared it in the second when Sarah Borgenicht matched the “little slam.”

Ashley McRae and Julia Fleming singled home runs for GI (7-3) in the third.

Niagara Falls 5, NT 4

Katie Syruws threw a four-hitter with six strikeouts and the Wolverines overcame a rough day in the field to pick up a key NFL win.

Syruws was 2-for-3 with three RBIs for NFHS (7-2 NFL). Also for the Falls, Holly Conte was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Brittany Hout added two hits in the win.

Julie Harmon had two hits for NT (6-3 NFL).

Baseball

Medina 9, Barker 6 (8)

The visiting Mustangs scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to win it. Mark Grimes singled in what proved to be the game-winning run for Medina (4-4 N-O). Josh Zinkievich followed up with a big two-run single to add some insurance.

Barker scored four runs in the home half of the fifth, highlighted by a triple by Steve Rowland, a run-producing double by Andrew Carmer and RBI singles by Shane Shultz and Tony Somberg. Carmer, who had a total of four hits on the day, also had a two-run triple in the first inning for the Raiders (3-5).

Newfane 13, CSAT 1

Rhon Pierce threw a complete game three-hitter with six strikeouts as the Panthers imrpoved to 7-2 in the N-O.

Nick Vona had three doubles and four RBIs, Brett Backes added two doubles and two RBIs and Matt Ames had three hits in the win.

CSAT falls to 2-6 in the N-O.

Akron 23, Roy-Hart 2

Nick Cummings pitched six innings, scattering eight hits and striking out nine as the Tigers won an N-O contest under the lights in Middleport. Cummings had two doubles and six RBIs for Akron (6-2 N-O). Roy-Hart fell to 3-6 in the league.

Niagara Falls 11, NT 9

At Rojek Field, Eric Cirrito hit a home run and three RBIs to lead the visiting Wolverines (9-7 overall, 3-6 NFL).

Also for the Wolverines, David Tighe and Jeff Conklin had two hits and an RBI apiece.

N-W 9, Ken East 4

The host Falcons were led by Paul Smith, who pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing six hits and two walks, while striking out seven. Smith also went 3-for-4 with three RBIs.

Also for N-W (8-6 overall, 6-3 NFL), Chris Gruarin was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs, Bryan MacSwan went 2-for-3 and Reese Bedient hit a triple.

Scott Whitehead went 3-for-4 and Cody Novo scored two runs for the Bulldogs (4-4).

Grand Island 5, Ken West 4

Greg Stephan had two hits at the plate and tossed a complete game on the hill as front-running Grand Island held off West in NFL action.

Stephan allowed only six hits and two earned runs for GI (12-1 overall, 8-1 NFL). Joe Oliverio was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Matt Klock, Shaun Winter and Mike Heftka added two hits apiece.

Jason Lajoie was 2-for-2 for West (2-7).
