HS ROUNDUP (May 8): Grand Island scores rare softball win over Kenmore West

Staff Reports

Duking it out like heavyweight contenders, Kenmore West and Grand Island swapped five-run innings in the early going Thursday, but it was the host Vikings who scored the 7-5 Niagara Frontier League victory at Veterans Park. The Vikings small-balled a deuce in the third to score their first win over the Blue Devils in more than a dozen years.

Alex Peters’ three-run triple keyed GI’s five-run first. West (6-2 NFL) squared it in the second when Sarah Borgenicht matched the “little slam.” Ashley McRae and Julia Fleming singled home runs for GI (6-3) in the third. Pitcher Emily Thompson kept the Devils at bay the rest of the way with the help of a double play started by third-sacker Shari Geblein in the sixth. Lexy Santa Maria pitched three-plus innings of scoreless relief for the Devils.
