HS ROUNDUP (May 10): Lancers pull out squeaker over NT
Staff Reports
Pinch runner Mike Ziobrowski scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh and Lewiston-Porter baseball team improved to 6-3 in the Niagara Frontier League with a 3-2 victory over North Tonawanda on Friday. Jeremy Willard threw a complete game with eight strikeouts, allowing just three hits.
Micah Puscheck pitched well into the seventh inning, scattering six hits for North Tonawanda (4-5) while Curtis Monaco scored both of the Lumberjacks’ runs.
St. Joe’s 9, O’Hara 1
Drew Mittry improved to 2-0 on the season, throwing a two-hitter with 14 striekouts as the Marauders improved to 4-6 in the Monsignor Martin. J.P. Farrell had three hits, while Cole Schneider and Pat Ruggerio each had two hits for St. Joe’s. For O’Hara, Ed Heffron had two hits.
Pioneer 4, Tonawanda 3
The Warriors lost on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh, falling to 3-6 in ECIC Division III play. Tonawanda got early RBIs from Brian McCarthy and Mike Tolsma, then took the lead on Tyler Lorich’s squeeze bunt before Pioneer (5-4) responded to get the win.
Junior Varsity
n Bradley Schlosser pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts and Jeff Robinsnon had two hits and three RBIs as Wilson evened its record at 2-2 in the N-O with a 12-4 win over Medina.
Softball
Roy-Hart 13, Akron 1
Lady Rams junior Coleen Rausch did everything but cut the grass, smacking three hits, including a home run and double, to finish with five RBIs in the Niagara-Orleans League win. Also for Roy-Hart (6-3, N-O), which smacked four dingers in all in the game, winning pitcher Amanda Werth (five innings, five strikeouts, two walks) belted a solo homer. Other homers came off the bats of Kelly Eagan (two-run HR) and Ashley Scrinzi (two hits). Akron dropped to 2-6 in the league.
Albion 8, Newfane 2
The Purple Eagles had 17 hits, including four from Lyndzea Hamilton, to improve to 6-2 in the N-O. Brandi Froman, Erika Newbould and Justine Daniels added three hits apiece. One of Froman’s hits was two-run home run, while Lindsey Colonna pitched a two-hitter with four strikeouts. Newfane falls to 3-6 in the league.
Wilson 7, Medina 6 (8 innings)
Jamie Lea Bryer hit the game-winning home run in the eighth inning as Wilson outlasted Medina to say perfect in the N-O. The Lakewomen (13-5 overall, 9-0 N-O) got a two-hitter out of winning pitcher Raela Wiley, who balanced nine strikeouts against nine walks. Caroline Augustiniak had two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs and Elise Jancef had two hits, including a two-run home run. Wiley added three hits and an RBI. Deb Harding had an RBI single for Medina (4-5).
Boys Tennis
Lockport 4, N-W 1
Andrew Smist and Evan Breloff posted singles victories for the Lions, who improved to 10-2 in the Niagara Frontier League. The tandems of Brandon Pawlinski and Kevin MIller along withAndrew Granchelli and Alex Schwartz were doubles winners for LHS. The Falcons (5-6 NFL) earned their point from Mike Slawich at second singles.
Niagara Falls 4, NT 1
Eric Spanbauer teamed up with Josh Carey to get his second win in first doubles since returning from a collapsed lung and the Wolverines (7-1 NFL) revved up for Monday’s meeting with Kenmore West by knocking down the Lumberjacks in NFL action. Matt Mourges and Elliott Kraft got a win in doubles for NT (2-8).
Lew-Port 3, Grand Island 2
Lewiston-Porter’s top doubles team of David Kahtib and Patrick Polley came from behind to win a three-set match and propel the Lancers (4-6 NFL) to a key NFL win. Mike Mucci earned a singles win for Grand Island (1-10), beating Brandon Piva in two tight sets.
Ken West 5, Ken East 0
Andre Pozantidis led the shutout with a win at first singles for Kenmore West, which extended its NFL unbeaten streak to 12 straight matches. Also for West (12-0 NFL), the first doubles team of Jackson Kocak and Jim Abbott scored a victory. East dropped to 2-8 in the NFL.
Medina 4, Newfane 1.5
Steve Lin, Ketan Mehta and Joe Moriarty earned singles wins as Medina (6-3 N-O) avenged an earlier season loss in the Niagara-Orleans League. Newfane falls 6-2.
Tonawanda 5, Alden 0
The doubles teams of Rob Russell and Jason Sylvester, along with Eric Carr and Trevor Vogel, shut out their opponents in consecutive games for Tonawanda (8-4), which finishes in third place in ECIC IV. Russell and Sylvester will both play in the ECIC championships.
Boys Lacrosse
Salamanca 22, Wilson 4
Erick Rudolph had two goals, but the Lakemen fell in Class C action. Ray McDonald had a goal and two assists and Kyle Lacey also scored for Wilson (2-11 overall, 2-10 Class C). The Warriors improved to 9-1 in the league.
Girls Lacrosse
Clarence 12, Lockport 10
Kristin Stone led the winners with four goals, including two in the last few minutes to seal the Division I win. Bri Nemmer added three goals for the Red Devils (6-6 Division I).
The Lady Lions were led by league-leading scorer Kayla Minner and Caroline Randall, each with three goals. Leah Sobieraski and Allie Quast added two goals each for LHS (2-10).
WSE 18, N-Wheatfield 14
Colleen George’s seven goals led West Seneca East (3-6) to the Division II win, getting past the goaltending of Nancy Siewell, who was playing her first game in goal for N-W (4-5). Zan Weinholtz had eight goals and four assists and Mia McKie added four goals and six assists in the loss.
Hamburg 16, Grand Island 5
Catie Hilliard scored twice as the Vikings fell to 0-9 in Division II. Nicole Shea had a hat trick for Hamburg.
