HS ROUNDUP (Dec. 13): NT girls hoops team picks up first win

The host North Tonawanda Lady Jacks had just three scorers, but that was enough to pull out the non-league girls basketball win over Hutch-Tech, 40-28, Wednesday night.

Joanna Fretthold led NT (1-3 overall) with 11 points and 15 rebounds, while Julie Harmon had a game-high 16 points and Amanda Herrmann completed the Lady Jacks’ scoring with 13 points.

Brianna Lee and Gina Moss led Hutch-Tech (0-4) with nine points each.



Holy Angels 59, Mount St. Mary 52

Sophomore Jasmine Shabazz had 14 points and 18 rebounds for Mount St. Mary (1-5 overall, 0-3 MMAA), but it wasn’t enough as the host Thunder dropped the Monsignor Martin contest.

A record and stats weren’t provided for Holy Angels.



Wrestling

Lockport 29, Kenmore West 21

Shaun Reynolds and Kyle Burdick scored wins at 171 and 112 pounds, respectively, as the host Lions scored their first Niagara Frontier League wrestling win of the season. The Lions improved to 7-5 overall and 1-1 in the NFL.

The visiting Blue Devils (0-2 NFL) got pinfall wins from Nathan Skiba (140) and Steve Zymanek (215).



Niagara-Wheatfield 46, Niagara Falls 12

The visiting Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons, who are ranked fourth in the state, got pins from Joey Malvestuto (103 pounds), John Golden (112), Jehad Ali (119), Tyler Daniels (140) and Angelo Malvestuto (171) in defeating Niagara Falls.

Also for Niagara-Wheatfield (2-0), Ysean Ali avenged an earlier loss to Niagara Falls’ James Scott, scoring a 10-5 win at 125 pounds, while Joe Silluzio scored a big win at 135 pounds, defeating Niagara Falls’ Irvin Buck 3-1 in overtime.

For Niagara Falls (1-1), Dan Mitravich scored a win at 152 pounds, while Ken Hamilton got a pin at 189 pounds.



Grand Island 50, Lew-Port 21

Lee Schuster (119), Joe Giambelluca (125), Tygue Bush (145) and Alex Webb (160) scored pinfall victories as the Vikings improved to 2-0 in the NFL with a road win.

Dan Regan (103) and Sean Roemer (171) won by pin for Lew-Port (0-2).



Kenmore East 36, N. Tonawanda 34

The visiting Bulldogs used three forfeit wins to move to 2-0 in the NFL. Ken East (3-3 overall) only got three true wins, via pin, from Jake Stewart, Lucas Germano and Ryan McGowan at 145, 160 and 171 pounds, respectively.

Wally Maziaraz (119), Tyler Bruce (125), Derrek Drass (130), Ryan Houghton (135) earned pinfall wins for NT (0-2, 0-2).



Maryvale 39, Tonawanda 30

Jason Phillips earned a pin at 119 pounds and the host school took advantage of three forfeits to win the ECIC III match Wednesday.

Also for Maryvale (1-2 overall, 1-1 ECIC III), Alex Bagne earned a pin at 125 pounds.

For Tonawanda (4-4 overall, 1-1 ECIC III), Kyle McGregor and Scott McGregor earned pins at 103 and 112 pounds, respectively. Josh Lilly earned a pin at 160 pounds for THS.

Charles Bacon (285) and Jordan McGregor (96) won by pin in exhibition matches for the Warriors.



Newfane 61, Barker 17

The host Panthers got eight pins in downing Barker in the Niagara-Orleans League opener for both teams.

Earning pins for Newfane (1-0 N-O) were: David Ciaramella (103), Steve Lakes (135), Ben Killian (145), Paul Ciaramella (152), Kenny Noble (160), Travis Guerriera (171), Bob Bearfield (215) and Ethan Brawley (285).

Barker (0-1 N-O) got pins from David Payfair at 112 pounds and Travis Duehwald at 119 pounds.



Albion 50, Wilson 19

Albion got pins from James Mapes (103 pounds), Matt Hilobuk (135) and Cole Nesbitt (160) in moving to 1-0 in the Niagara-Orleans League.

Wilson (0-1), got a pin from Jordan Gelnett.



Roy-Hart 52, Akron 19

The Rams (1-0 N-O) got pins from Jeff Brigham (145 pounds), Tyler Brent (171) and Morgan Fonzi (275) in the win.

Akron (0-1 N-O) got a win from Kyle Gertman at 140 pounds.



Boys basketball

Amherst 61, Tonawanda 19

Harley Burrows had a game-high nine points, but the visiting Warriors fell in ECIC III play.

Kevin Ford led a balanced scoring attack for Amherst (2-2, 1-0), scoring eight points.



Depew 58, O’Hara 41

Cardinal O’Hara coach Sil Dan said his team played Wednesday night how it practiced the past few days, which is to say not very well. The Hawks fell, 58-41, to Depew in the Monsignor Martin/ECIC Challenge at St. Mary’s of Lancaster.

“I didn’t do a very good job preparing the guys,” Dan said. “We didn’t do much of anything right.”

The Hawks fell behind 32-20 at halftime. Depew got 11 points each from Greg Osika and Anthony Battaglia in the win.

James Ewing led O’Hara with 19 points.

O’Hara fell to 3-2, while a record wasn’t provided for Depew.
