H.S. ROUNDUP: Rausch hurls no-hitter in Roy-Hart shutout win

MIDDPLEPORT —
Royalton-Hartland junior right-hander Coleen Rausch pitched a no-hitter on Monday, leading the Lady Rams past visiting Medina, 7-0, on “Senior Night,” topping Niagara-Orleans League softball action. It’s the second no-hitter this yeaar that Rausch has thrown. Earlier this year, she combined with Mandy Werth to toss a no-no at Newfane.
Rausch struck out 12 and walked just two as head coach Bill Holahan’s Lady Rams improved to 10-3 in the league. Medina dropped to 6-7.
“The honest to goodness truth of the matter is that I didn’t know it was a no-hitter until after the game,” Holahan said.
“It was senior night and we were concerned with honoring our seniors. Someone asked me as soon as the game ended, ‘Was that a no hitter?’ So I checked the book and there wasn’t anything close to a hit.”
Offensively, Roy-Hart was led by Werth with three hits and three RBIs. Amanda Walker and Molly McEvoy added two hits apiece.
Rausch said she had her fastball and change-up working well all night. It
“We had good defending tonight,” said Rausch, a futuree elementary school teacher.
“It was really great because it was senior night and it was a good all-around win.”
The Lady Rams scored the only run they needed as it turned out in the first inning on an RBI single by Werth. They opened up a little breathing room by scoring three times in the second on RBI singles by Walker and Werth and a fielders choice play off the bat of Rausch.
Werth later added an RBI double to cap a two-run fifth frame. Defensively, Ashley Scrinzi paced the Lady Rams at shortstop with three assists and a put out.
Newfane 13, CSAT 2
Sam Kelly, Melissa Kroe, Kristi Grimes and Justine Esposito each had three hits for head coach Katy Stedman’s Lady Panthers (5-8 Niagara-Orleans League).
Kelly, Kroe and Grimes all had two baggers for the hosts. Winning pitcher Jen Werth fanned seven for the winners.
CSAT dropped to 1-12.
On Friday, visiting Newfane dumped Barker, 11-8, led by a 4-for-4 performance at the plate from Kelly.
Esposito added three hits and Jessie Schermerhorn and Tessa Granchelli chipped in with two hits apiece. Werth fanned seven more in the circle.
Wilson 9, Barker 1
A two-run single by winning pitcher Raela Wiley in the first inning put Wilson on top to stay as the Lakewomen clinched the league title.
Wiley also doubled in the fifth frame and scored on a single by Jamie Lea Bryer.
Wilson (12-1 N-O) capped off the win by scoring three times in the sixth as Elise Jancef had an RBI double and Kelly O’Keefe an RBI single. O’Keefe had three hits and Bryer had two rips for the Lakewomen.
In the circle, Wiley threw six innings and Molly Bloom one as they combined for a five-hitter with eight strikeouts.
Becca Quackenbush had a double for Barker (5-8).
Albion 7, Akron 4
Lindsey Colonna hurled a four hitter with six strikeouts fand had two hits as Albion moved to 10-3 in the N-O.
Lyndsea Hamilton and Erika Newbould each had two hits for the Purple Eagles. The loss drops Akro to 4-9.
BASEBALL
Albion 15, Newfane 5
Unbeaten Albion scored 10 runs in the first inning to clinch the league title.
Jeff Andalore had a home run, winning pitcher Justin Ward ripped a two-run triple, Kevin Walter had a two-run double and Tom Hicks roped a two-run single in the decisive opening frame. Ward hit for the cyle and tossed five innings with seven strikeouts for the Purple Eagles (12-0 N-O).
Matt Ames had an RBI double and Trevor Richardson added an RBI single for the Panthers, who jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top half of the first inning. Richardson and Brett Backes each had two hits for the Panthers (8-4).
Akron 11, Barker 1
Nick Cummings pitched a one-hitter with 17 strikeouts to lead Akron to the N-O win. Cummings also had a triple, double and three RBIs at the dish for Akron (9-3 N-O).
Kyle Borchert added three hits for the Tigers, while Larry Skidmore had two hits and Ryan Carberry ripped a two-run double. Barker fell to 5-7 in the league.
Medina 11, CSAT 7
A six-run first inning sparked Medina to the N-O win at Vets Park. Tyler Evans and Donnie O’Keefe had two hits for the Mustangs (7-5 N-O). CSAT fell to 3-9.
Lew-Port 10, Ken West 8
Jeremy Willard’s three-run double in the sixth inning broke a 5-5 tie and led the Lancers to the Niagara Frontier League win at Washuta Park. Rob Daggett added a double, home run and three RBIs for the hard-hitting Lancers (12-7 overall, 9-4 NFL).
Rick Christopher had three hits, including a home run, and three RBIs for West (2-11). John Dray added two hits for the Blue Devils.
Grand Island 13, Ken East 5
Neal DeMartin was 4-for-5 with three RBIs as the Vikings continued to roll in NFL play. Shaun Winter was 3-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBIs and Mike Heftka added two hits and three RBIs for GI (16-1 overall, 12-1 NFL).
For East (6-7), Kevin Whitehead was 2-for-3 with a pair of triples and an RBI.
Boys Lacrosse
Cicero-North Syracuse 16, N-W 15
James Haney netted the winning goal in overtime to give Cicero-North Syracuse the non-league win over the Falcons. Haney’s goal was one of four for the game and Lloyd Hamilton had four scores of his own in the win.
Kyle Henry led N-W (12-5 overall, 8-1 Class A) with four goals, Emmett Printup had two goals and four assists and Elijha Printup scored twice and dished out three helpers. Also for N-W, Tomas Lester had three goals and Dave Evert found the net twice.
Will. North 16, NT 3
Cory Stuff had two goals, but the Lumberjacks fell in their Class A finale. Alec Lemanski also scored for the hosts. No additional information was available.
TENNIS
Newfane 3.5, Albion 2
A three-set win by Michael Goegelein at third singles provided the margin of victory for Newfane in Niagara-Orleans League action. Newfane finishes the season at 9-3 and Albion at 4-8.
Track & Field
N-O Meet
MIDDLEPORT — Host Royalton-Hartland earned three first-place finishes Monday as the first day of the two-day 2008 Niagara-Orleans League Track & Field Championships was held.
Kelly Heuer of the Lady Rams won the girls 3,000 in 11:32.43.
Roy-Hart also won the 1,600 relay in 4:14.39 with the foursome of Liz DeWaters, Rachael Phipps, Teresa White and Christine Badhorn.
Barker’s Emma Dewart was a double winner in the high jump (5-2) and triple jump (34-4 1/2).
Newfane also had a double winner in martial arts expert Adam Irr, who captured the 800 (2:04.40) and the pole vault (10-0).
Newfane’s Molly Coakley, a top local gymnast, won the girls pole vault (9-6) and her Lady Panthers teammate, Ally Pierce, took the discus (89-7).
Wilson’s Don Truesdell won the 3,200 (9:51.43).
Albion’s Marcus Taylor won the boy’s triple jump with a leap of 41-0 and also teamed up with Morris Taylor, Ben Wadhams and Chad Kirby to win the 1,600 relay in 3:41.44.
Hannah Moffett took first for the Purple Eagles in the girls 800 in a time of 2:30.58.
