H.S. GOLF: Conditions hamper local prep golfers

By Nate Beutel

LANCASTER Hopes for a state title from any of the local public high school linksters were dashed Monday, largely due to the horrid weather conditions.

With rain, hail and high wind gusts blowing through the area throughout the day, scores were up and the caliber of play was down at the annual Section VI Boys Golf Tournament at Lancaster Country Club.

Not one of the 15 golfers from the Niagara Frontier or Niagara-Orleans leagues qualified for the state tournament, which is scheduled for May 31-June 2 at Cornell University.

Lockport’s Desmond Stoll, the NFL champion last fall as a freshman, shot 92 in the morning and failed to qualify for the afternoon round.

The full results, including the scores of the rest of the local competitors, were not provided.

Kenmore East freshman Pierce Terrance was the top local finisher with a total of 128. He finished as the second alternate to the nine-member state team after sneaking past fellow NFL competitor Anthony DiBacco of Lew-Port in a playoff. DiBacco, a junior, is the third alternate.

The NFL chairman added that it was the highest scoring he had seen in his coaching career, which spans more than a decade. The cut to make it into the top 20 and ties and earn a berth in the nine-hole afternoon session was 88.

Sophomore Matt Petrosian of Lew-Port, a state competitor as an alternate from a year ago, finished in a tie for 13th after firing a 131.
