H.S. ROUNDUP: Smist, DiTullio, Carroll, shine in tennis

LANCASTER Lockport’s doubles tandem of juniors Matt DiTullio and Andrew Smist, along with singles player Tim Carroll of Wilson were the only first-round local winners Tuesday at the annual Section VI Boys Tennis Championships.

The tournament concludes today, beginning at 3 p.m.

Caroll beat Taylor Hogenkamp of East Aurora, 7-5, 6-2; then went on to the second roundto lose to third-seeded Dave Yovanoff of Eden, 6-0, 6-2.

Smist and DiTullio defeated Bin Chen and Johnnie Tran also from Hutch Tech, 6-0, 6-0. In the quarterfinals, they lost to Clark Driscoll and Ben Pappalardo of OP, 6-2, 6-0.

Also in singles action, Steve Lin from Medina lost to Aaron Young of Frewsburg, 6-1, 6-1. Bryan Papaj of Kenmore East lost to Max Middleton, also of Frewsburg, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. Alex Buerger of Niagara-Wheatfield lost to Jerome Bunkley of City Honors, 6-3, 7-5. Kenmore West’s Andre Pozantidis was suspended for the tournament due to a violation of school conduct.

In doubles, the Niagara Falls duo of Eric Spanbauer and Curt Ventresca defeated Jerry Chimnichahn and Anthony Vu from Hutch Tech, 6-1, 6-1. They went on to the quarterfinals, where they were defeated by the first-seeded team of Eric Johnson and Bryan Matthews of Orchard Park, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

For Wilson, Caleb Rohring and Kyle Bogdan lost to the Southwestern team of Tim O’Brien and Ted Mueller, 6-3, 6-1, in the opening round.

The Newfane team of Bob Andreas and Matt Fischer also lost to the Orchard Park team of Johnson and Matthews. The score was 6-3, 6-1.



Baseball

NT 8, Lockport 5 (13)

Lockport’s starting pitcher Dan Greco tossed an incredible 125 pitches over 10 innings on Tuesday, but it wasn’t enough for the Lions, who lost a heartbreaker in 13 innings at Outwater Park.

Kevin Miller pitched seven scoreless innings in relief and Doug Vaillancourt knocked in the winning runs with a double in the 13th for the Jacks in the Niagara Frontier League win.

Greco, a senior right-hander, struck out nine batters for Lockport (3-10 NFL).

Kyle Fernandez had two RBIs. After catching 10 innings, Fernandez went on to pitch three innings of relief for Lockport.

The Lions scored three runs in the sixth to tie the game 5-5. Pinch hitters Ryan Tinkham and Colton Fago delivered clutch, RBI singles for the Lions.

Ryan Gately had three hits for LHS.

Kevin Border had three hits and three RBIs for NT (8-9, 6-7 NFL).

Newfane 17, Barker 6

Brett Backes had four hits and pitched a complete-game five hitter as the Panthers rolled to the big Niagara-Orleans League win.

Joe Robison had four hits, including a pair of doubles, in the win. Collin Flagler scored three runs and Nick Vona scored four runs for Newfane (9-4 N-O).

Cody Blackley clubbed a home run for the Raiders (5-8 N-O).

Medina 11, Roy-Hart 8

Winning pitcher Andrew Misiti had a two-run single in the fifth inning forthe Mustangs (8-5 N-O).

Matt Kuhn had three hits for Roy-Hart (4-9 N-O).

Starpoint 7, Sweet Home 4

Kevin Hughes pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts as the Spartans pulled out a come-from-behind non-league victory.

Hughes had two doubles and three runs scored while Tim Szalkowski tied the game in the fifth with an RBI double, then knocked in two more runs.

Ryan Gregg scored the go-ahead run after doubling, coming home on a passed ball.

Sophomore Jon Corbi added two doubles for Starpoint (8-11 overall), which finished in fifth place in ECIC III.



Softball

NT 9, Lockport 6

Julie Harmon had a field day at the plate, going 2-for-2 for the Lady Jacks (10-7 overall, 7-6 NFL).

Lockport dropped to 0-13 in the league.

Ken West 5, Niagara Falls 4 (10)

Kaley Vazquez had an RBI single in the top of the 10th inning for the Lady Blue Devils (11-2 NFL) clinched at least a share of the NFL title.

Holly Conte had two hits for the Lady Wolverines (9-3 NFL).

Boys Track

Iroquois 74, Starpoint 67

Brandon Murie won the 100, 400, 200 and anchored thw inning 400 relay team as the Chiefs won the ECIC II meet. Sam Mattina (110 HH, high jump) was a double winner for the Spartans (3-2 ECIC II).

Ken East 72, Ken West 69

Anthony Johnson won the 100, 200, long jump and shot put as the Bulldogs won the annual rivalry NFL meet at Crosby Field. Tim Metivier (400, 800) and Zack Ball (1,600, 3,200) were double winners for East (2-3 NFL).

Doug Hannon won the 400 IH and triple jump for West (1-4).

Grand Island 90, Niagara Falls 51

Jared Northrup won the 110 HH and 400 IH and Chris Carter took both the 800 and 1,600 as the Vikings moved to 5-0 in the NFL.

Brian Archie won the 100, long jump and triple jump for NFHS (0-5).



Girls Track

Starpoint 102, Iroquois 39

Victoria Jaynes set the school record in the pole vault with a leap of 10 feet, three inches helping the Lady Spartans complete an undefeated ECIC II season.

Jaynes also won the triple jump and long jump, while Ashley Boyce (100 HH, 400 IH), Cara Doyle (100, 200) and Katie Baglio (shot put, discus) were double winners for Starpoint (5-0 ECIC II).

Iroquois fell to 1-4.

Ken East 72, Ken West 69

Sarah Kosloski (1,500, 3,000) and Kristen Cook (shot put, discus) were double winners for the Lady Bulldogs.

Jenna Panepinto (200, 400 IH, triple jump) was a triple winner for West.

Grand Island 106, Niagara Falls 33

Jenna Raepple (long jump, triple jump) and Maria Grant (shot put, discus) were double winners for the Lady Vikings (5-0 NFL).

Bashiyra Doss won the 100 and 200 for NFHS (0-5).

Boys Lacrosse

Timon 9, Grand Island 1

Alex Hultgren had the long goals for the Vikings in a non-league loss. Kyle Spratford had 10 saves in net for GI (6-9 overall), Timon improved to 12-2.
