YOUTH SWIMMING: Briarwood hosts city swim meet

First such event at the club pool in two decades.

Staff Reports
Lockport Union-Sun & Journal

LOCKPORT Several dozen youths participated recently in the City Swim Championships at Briarwood Pool.

The weather was sunny and clear as hundreds of people once again fielded the Briarwood grounds after a 20 year absence.

All Lockport High School varsity and junior varsity girls swimmers participated in the meet, allowing the coaches to get some rough times and watch how the girls competed. Swimmers signed up for many events as they wished.

A cumulative scoring system was used with the 6-8-year-old division swimmers competing in four events with the possible over all high score of 24 and the 9-11, 12-14 and 15-18 groups competing in 10 events for a possible perfect score of 60.

Swimmers from first place to sixth place earned ribbons.

Topping the 6-8 girls division was Megan Mietlicki, who placed first with 24 points. She was followed by Katie Pollack and Julia LaRose (both 16 points). On the boys side, Luke Lawrence was first with 24 points, followed by Sam Murphy and Ethan Shaft.

Elizabeth Connolly topped the girls 9-11 group with 36 points. She was followed by Hannah Lawrence (33) and Kristina Connolly (25). Dave Arlington was the top boys swimmer in the 9-11 group with 21 points. Behind him were Danny DiMillo (16) and Robert Beaulieu (15).

The top 12-14 girls swimmer with 31 points was Sarah DesJardins. She was followed by Hannah Folby (30) and Danielle Dembrow (29). Topping the boys in the division was Phil Crane with 34 points, followed by Garrett Sheehan (29) and Derek Secord (25).

In the 15-18 girls division, Erica Crane was first with 25 points. In second was Caroline Tolli (12) and in third was Megan Murphy (11).

Mark Wallace topped the boys side with 60 out of 60 points. Wallace was followed by Kevin Schroeder (42) and Erik Ellis (24).

Briarwood wished to thank all the sponsors, volunteer parents and swimmers who helped to make the event a huge success.
