H.S. BOYS SOCCER: Soccer Rams open with win, Lions bow

Royalton-Hartland junior forward Brian Yaiser’s first varsity goal on Friday was a huge one for head coach Scott Hughes’ young, but talented Rams team.
Brent Russell added the assist for the Rams (1-0) in their 1-0 non-league win at the Eden Tournament on a play that began on a throw-in. Russell sent a pass out to the left wing, where Yaiser fired a shot that sneaked in off the far post.
Also making his first varsity start, sophomore R-H keeper Shawn Slattery earned the shutout, making four saves. He had a lot of help from defenders Joe Monti (junior) and Matt Heschke (senior).
• Churchville-Chili 3, Lockport 0
CHURCHVILLE — Host Section V power Churchville jumped on the visiting Lockport Lions, scoring two goals in the first 10 minutes of the game, then cruised to a 3-0 non-league boys varsity soccer victory on Friday.
“We’ll chalk this up as a learning experience,” said Lions head coach Jeff Hulshoff.
“Now we know the things we need to work on, which is good.”
Top performers for Lockport included junior forward Matt McCoy, Adam Wright on defense, who came in as a substitute; and Jim May at midfield.
Junior forward Andrew Granchelli also played well for the Lions, Hulshoff said.
Next up, the Lions host North Tonawanda at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Niagara Frontier League opener.
In junior varsity play on Friday, Jacob Kwoka scored the lone goal for Lockport in a 2-1 loss at Churchville Chili.
• Lew-Port 1, Sweet Home 0
Mike Grannis’ goal midway through the second half gave the Lancers a non-league victory. P.D. Polley had the assist, while Matt Delmonte got the shutout after making five saves for Lew-Port (1-0 overall).
Clarence 3, Grand Island 1
Despite a goal from Bobby Ross, the visiting Vikings fell in non-league action.
Joe Fischer picked up the assist, while Jeremy Figler made 15 saves in net for GI (0-1 overall).
For the Red Devils (1-0), Ben Scalzi had a pair of goals and Tyler Hammill also scored.
• Niagara Falls 1, Frontier 1
Josh Carey scored for the Wolverines in their season-opening non-league tie.
Mike Ciraolo had 11 saves in goal for NFHS (0-0-1 overall) to prevent Frontier from gaining a late lead.
Paul Morrison and August Cadle also played well for the Wolverines. Dan Matuszak scored the lone goal for Frontier (0-0-1).
• Maryvale 3, Tonawanda 0
The Warriors dropped their 2008 opener in a non-league contest that was switched to Clint Small Stadium.
Freshman keeper William Strehlow made eight saves for Tonawanda (0-1 overall).
