H.S. ROUNDUP (9/3/08): Lady Spartans spikers off and running

The Starpoint Lady Spartans made their ECIC Div. II debut and came away with an easy win, 25-10, 25-12, 25-14, over West Seneca East.

Coastal-Carolina signee Sam Palka led the way with 15 service points, including five aces, and 11 kills.

Also for Starpoint (1-0 overall, 1-0 ECIC II), Alex Dowell had nine service points and both Veronica Crosby and Andi Ridge tallied five kills.

West Seneca East fell to 0-1 in league play.

Ken West 3, NW 0

Taylor Lewandowski had eight kills and 12 digs as the Blue Devils won their Niagara Frontier League opener, 25-11, 25-20, 25-21. Also for West (1-0 overall, 1-0 NFL), Lauren Kirby had eight kills. For N-W (0-2, 0-1), Jessica Crooks had seven kills and three blocks and Ashley Campagnolo added 12 digs.

Sacred Heart 3, NT 0

Despite five kills and three blocks from Joanna Fretthold, the Lady Jacks fell in non-league action, 25-22, 25-23, 25-10.

Sarah Hansen added four kills and seven digs for NT (1-1 overall). Sacred Heart moved to 1-0.

Girls Tennis

N-W 4, Lockport 1

The Falcons (1-0 NFL) got singles wins from Angela Hastings and Kaite Fye as well as doubles wins from the tandems of Emily Owens-Kelsey Walck and Megan Cavanaugh-Taylor Cochran.

The sole Lady Lions (0-1) point came from Andrea Licata at second singles.

Ken East 5, Lew-Port 0

The Bulldogs swept the singles competition in their Niagara Frontier League opener with wins from Molly Lundquist, Kelsey Cox and Dana Fischer.

Doubles winners for East (1-0 NFL) were the tandems of Amanda Wojcinski-Ashley Wire along with Kerrie O’Keeffe-Katie Anderson.

Grand Island 5, NT 0

Sweeping the singles competition for the Vikings in NFL action were Kaitie Samland, Alexandra Buscaglia and Kelsey Mash.

Earning doubles wins for GI (1-0 NFL) were the tandems of Kim Asbach-Julie Hasselbeck and Anna Ferrante-Alyssa Accardo.

Ken West 5, Niagara Falls 0

The Blue Devils opened their season with a singles sweep by Emily Lemen, Tara Lemen and Alex Filey. Earning doubles wins for West (1-0 NFL) were the tandems of Allie Diamond-Avery Fischer and Katie Dzielski-Amanda Brylinski.

Boys Soccer

Starpoint 1, Maryvale 0

Tim Clark made five saves to earn the shutout in goal for the Spartans in their ECIC III opener. Hamilton Karczewski scored the lone goal for Starpoint (1-0 overall, 1-0 ECIC III). For the Flyers (0-1 ECIC III), Brian Macie played a strong game at midfield.

Depew 3, Roy-Hart 1

Mike Slattery scored Roy-Hart’s lone goal off an assist from Jake Peters.

The Rams fell to 1-2 overall.

V-Brockport 2, Albion 1

Peter Zingel and Chris Zale scored for Brockport in the non-league win. Ty Smarpat had the lone goal for the Purple Eagles, who got 20 saves from goalkeeper Elliott Foss.

Junior Varsity

n Josh Maternowski, Mike Borner, R.J. Scarupa and Tim Doores scored Starpoint in a 4-1 win over Maryvale.

Girls Soccer

Newfane 5, Barker 0

Kenzie Wohleben netted two goals for the Panthers, who scored a Niagara-Orleans League victory. Also scoring goals for Newfane (1-0 N-O) were Haley Weber, Samantha Kelly and Brittany Backes. Andrea Adinolfe earned the shutout, making 12 saves. Barker dropped to 0-1 in the N-O.

Akron 5, Roy-Hart 0

Five different players — Cassidy Welch, Ashley Lauricella, Ali Cashmore, Samantha Cummings and Adrianne Salmon — scored goals for Akron (1-0 N-O) in the N-O win. Kim Kenline earned the shutout in goal. The Lady Rams dropped to 0-1 in the N-O.

Albion 2, Wilson 1

Emilie Edwards scored a goal in each half to help spark Albion to the narrow N-O win over the Lakewomen in a matchup of last fall’s top two finishing squads. No additional information was provided.

Starpoint 9, Maryvale 0

Sisters Kristi and Teresa Delabio each had two goals as the Lady Spartans opened their ECIC III season with a big win.

Michelle Hale, Brittany Bratek, Katelyn Mazgaj, Kristy Giberson and Catie Hale also scored for Starpoint (1-0 overall, 1-0 ECIC III).

Chelsea Reed had the shutout with 10 saves. The Flyers fell to 0-1 in the league.

Medina 3, Olean 3

Alishia Newman scored twice and Raylee Fergen added a tally as the Mustangs (0-1-1 overall) rallied for a non-league tie.

Golf

Lockport 255, Ken West 283

At the Lockport Town & Country Club, Lockport’s sophomore sensation Desmond Stoll led the way in Opening Day Niagara Frontier League action with medalist honors by carding a 37.

Also for the Lions (1-0 NFL), Brian Neidrauer fired a 41 and Ryan Barrett added a 42.

Topping the Blue Devils (0-1 NFL) with a 43 was Mike McCrossan.

Lew-Port 239, N-W 243

Medaiist Anthony DiBacco fired an even-par 36 to help the Lancers to victory at Tan Tara Golf Club.

Matt Petrosian and Mike Boss each carded a 38 and Anthony Laurendi added a 40 for Lew-Port (1-0 NFL).

For the Falcons (0-1), Alex Buerger had a 39 and both Carl Graff and Nick Quarantillo shot 40.

Ken East 253, Niagara Falls 256

Pierce Terrance shot a two-over 38 to lift the Bulldogs to a narrow NFL win at Hyde Park Golf Course. Austin Ford added a 39 and Anthony Coppola carded a 41 for East (1-0 NFL). Stosh Kajfasz and Greg Bullock each shot 39 and T.J. Bullock shipped in with a 41 for NFHS (0-1).

NT 258, Grand Island 270

NT’s Alex Godfrey shared medalist honors with Ryan Johnson of GI after both shot 40, but it was the Lumberjacks that won their NFL opener at River Oaks Golf Club. Also for NT (1-0 NFL), Justin Kafzubski and Dan Brick each shot 43. Darren Delsignore shot 43 for the Vikings (0-1).

Field Hockey

Hamburg 2, Starpoint 2

The Lady Spartans trailed 2-0 at the half, but battled back for a tie in their ECIC small schools opener.

Krista Raimondo tied the game at two 13 minutes into the second half when she put home a rebound.

Chelsea Boggess scored the other Starpoint goal off a pass from Megan Joyner.

Anna McCullogh made 18 saves in goal for Starpoint (0-0-1 overall, 0-0-1 ECIC small schools).

For Hamburg (0-0-1, 0-0-1), Megan Smith and Shannon Westfall scored.
