H.S. ROUNDUP (9/5/08): Grand Island topples Lew-Port in VI football opener

Staff Reports
Lockport Union-Sun & Journal

The Grand Island Vikings rushed for 228 yards Friday night en route to a commanding 28-0 shutout victory over their former Class A North rivals, Lewiston-Porter.

“With the rain, it was really good to be able to come right out and pound it at them,” GI coach Dean Santorio said.

“We’ve kind of been a work in progress up front, but the guys did a great job with their run blocking and both of our backs ran really well.”

After both teams traded possessions early on, GI struck late in the first quarter when running back Andy Lalonde made a nice cutback for a 10-yard touchdown run. Fellow tailback Eddie Weiser set up the TD with a 25-yard scamper of his own.

On their next possession, the Vikings would strike again thanks in large part to a nifty 48-yard punt return from Alex Neutz. Weiser, who finished with 146 yards on 14 carries, then needed only two rushes to finish off the 22-yard drive and put GI up by two scores as the second quarter began.

Just as it appeared the Vikings would score again, the Lancers defense forced GI to turn the ball over on downs after making a goal-line stand on the one-yard line. Unfortunately, the poor field position worked against them when quarterback Matt Cattarin was brought down in the end zone for a safety by Brett Dlugosz.

Following the ensuing free kick, GI needed only five plays to find the end zone again. Weiser completed the drive and put GI up 21-0 heading to the half with a three-yard plunge over the right side.

Lew-Port seemed to start the second half with a spark as Cattarin completed a 13-yard pass to James Butera on third down. Any momentum that the Lancers may have been building, though, was shot down when the they fumbled the ball away on the very next play.

GI would then march down the field for their fourth and final touchdown when quarterback Joe Oliverio leaned his way into the end zone from a yard out on fourth down.

The Lakemen (0-1) were led by wideout Ethan Baker, who capped off a six-minute opening drive in the first quarter with a touchdown reception from John Vincent. Baker finished with three catches for 57 yards. Running back AJ White added 58 yards on 12 carries.
