SOCCER: Host Lions win soccer tournament
Staff Report
Angelo DiMillo’s header early in the second half catapulted Lockport to a 3-1 comeback victory over Nichols on Saturday in the championship game of the host Lions’ annual tournament. Matt McCoy added two more goals for Lockport (3-1 overall), including one on a penalty kick.
“It was a very chippy, very physical game,” said Lions head coach Jeff Hulshoff.
Nichols led 1-0 at halftime on a goal by Chris Walter.
Four minutes into the second half, DiMillo headed in a cross by Jim May.
“The goalie had no chance. It was bam bam. That got us really pumped up,” Hulshoff said.
Four minutes later, Lockport’s Andrew Granchelli (tournament Most Valuable Player) was hauled down in the box and McCoy converted on a penalty kick for a 2-1 LHS lead. McCoy scored later on a direct kick from just outside the penalty area, wrapping a beautiful the shot around the Nichols’ wall.
Lions keeper Chris Paradise made six saves to earn the win in goal.
“Jay Dry played a great game for us and had a monster two games in the tournament,” Hulshoff said.
“He stepped up and totally controlled the middle of the field in both games.”
Named to the All-Tournament Team were Dry, DiMillo, McCoy, May and Jon Greig from LHS, Evan Luke and Bennett Kenyon of Nichols, Ollie Jackson and Luke Barns of Williamsville North; and from Starpoint, Chris Kufchak and Nick Rowan.
Williamsville North beat Starpoint 2-0 in the boys varsity consolation game on Saturday. Barns and Pat McCann scored the goals.
Nichols beat Starpoint 7-1 in the girls varsity title game Saturday. Williamsville North beat the Lady Lions in the consolation game, 5-0. No additional information was provided.
