HS ROUNDUP (Sept. 10): DeWaters’ marker lifts Roy-Hart to victory

Liz DeWaters scored the lone goal of the game in the first half to lead the Roy-Hart Lady Rams scored a key 1-0 Niagara-Orleans League field hockey win over Medina at Vets Park on Tuesday. Goalie Amanda Catalano made a couple key saves down the stretch for Roy-Hart (2-1 N-O), including a breakaway stop with just minutes remaining. Defender Amanda Walker also played well, according to Lady Rams coach John Jablonski. The Mustangs dropped to 2-1 in the league.

Barker 2, Akron 1

Crystal Mott’s tally with 14:05 remaining propeled the Lady Raiders to a key N-O victory. Brittany Cordero also scored for Barker (3-0 N-O). Nicole Marcello scored for Akron (2-1).

Newfane 7, Ken West 0

Emily Flagler and Molly Coakley each scored two goals as the Panthers improved to 1-1-1 in N-O play. Also scoring for the Lady Panthers was Vanessa LaRose, Megan Coakley and Melissa Kroe. West drops to 0-3 in the league.

Ken East 2, Wilson 0

Ashley Flynn made 11 saves to earn the shutout for the Bulldogs, who earned their first N-O victory of the year. Wilson fell to 0-2-1. No additional information was provided.

Boys Soccer

Wilson 3, Newfane 1

Josh Heusinger scored all three goals, including a penalty kick, to help the Lakemen earn the Niagara-Orleans League win in their season opener. Odane Todd had two assists, while Collin Okoniewski and Kyle Hanes split goalkeeping duties. Also for Wilson (1-0 overall, 1-0 N-O), Garrett McIntosh played well at sweeper. Steve Sweet scored for the Panthers (0-1, 0-1).

Medina 2, Roy-Hart 1

John Louis Pane scored the game-winning goal with just over 10 minutes left to give the Mustangs the N-O victory. Andrew Incho also scored for Medina (1-0 N-O). Billy Costello scored the lone goal for the Rams (0-1).

Akron 5, Albion 2

The Tigers scored three times in the second half to pick up the N-O victory. Cory Baker had two goals, while Trevor Short, Kyle Buscaglia and Mitch Bramley also scored for Akron (1-0 N-O). Ty Smarpat and Cole Schmitt scored for Albion (0-1).

Eden 5, Tonawanda 1

Joe Massaro scored the lone goal for THS (1-2, 1-1) on a pass from Phil Giuga in the ECIC IV loss at Clinton Small Stadium. The Raiders improved to 1-2 in the league.

NT 1, Nichols 0

Junior Al Diminuco chipped in a free kick late in the second half for the lone goal of the game as the Lumberjacks picked up the non-league victory. Also for NT (2-1), Matt Mourgas made 12 saves for the shutout and Greg Hoffman stood out at sweeper. No information was available for the Vikings.

GIRLS SOCCER

Roy-Hart 3, CCA 2

A goal by Alli White with 12:14 to go in the second half proved to be the game winner for the Lady Rams in a non-league contest. Roy-Hart also got gopals from Becca Wagner and Kelly Bower.

Niagara Falls 7, O’Hara 0

Olivia Fleming had a goal and two assists as the Wolverines picked up their first win of the season in non-league action.

“We played Grand Island (Monday) and got beat pretty bad, so we took out our frustrations today,” Niagara Falls coach Mia Bianco said. “We’re playing together more as a team and we’re really stepping up.”

Also scoring for the Falls (1-3 overall), was Joanna Monaco, Darcie Rosinski, Amelia Martinez, Shana Ventresca, Nikita Vantresca and Samantha Wall. Jamie Olander and Tara Mitravich split time in the nets for the shutout. No information was available for the Hawks.

Golf

N-W 241, Grand Island 244

Despite medalist Jon Osberg of GI firing a one-under par 35 at Tan Tara, the Falcons picked up the Niagara Frontier League win. Alex Buerger and Nick Ross each carded 39s for N-W (2-1 NFL), while Carl Graff and Ryan Hulub each shot a 40 in the win. For GI (0-2), Alex Frey had a 38 and Darren Delsignore shot a 40.

Lew-Port 240, Ken East 260

Medalist Matt Petrosian shot a one-over par 37 at Niagara Frontier Country Club to help the Lancers to the NFL win. Kyle Donovan added a 38, while Mike Boss, Anthony DiBacco and Mike Guetta each had a 41 for Lew-Port (4-0 NFL). For East (2-2), Perce Terrance shot a 40 and Anthony Coppola, Dan Giliforte and Austin Ford each had a 42.

Newfane 208, Albion 246

Medalist Collin Flagler fired a two-over par 38 at Hickory Ridge to help the Panthers improve to 4-0 in the Niagara-Orleans League. Also for Newfane, John Lipa and Bill Coackayne had 41s and Nick Nickerson added a 42. For Albion (0-3), Ryan Gurnsley had a 44.

Wilson 242, Roy-Hart 291

At Shelridge, medalist Andy Carroll shot a 40 to help the Lakemen improve to 3-0. Ryan Clark added a 46 for Wilson, while Corey Callaghan had a 41 to lead the Rams.

Canisius 20.5, NC 3.5

Zach Clark and Jake Felicetti each shot 41, but the Patriots fell in Monsignor Martin action at Cheery Hill. David Lee Vendetti also took two points for NC (0-1 MMAA). Chris Anderson took medalist honors for Canisius (1-0).

Maryvale 374, Tonawanda 443

Medalist David Nowak shot 43 at par-36 Diamond Hawk to lead the Flyers (1-0) to the ECIC small schools north division win.

Geoff Nowakowski was the low shooter with 50 for Tonawanda (0-2). Zach Carlisle shot 55 for Tonawanda.

Boys Volleyball

NT 3, Niagara Falls 0

Lumberjacks captain Kevin Fretthold had 13 kills and eight aces as NT picked up the Niagara Fronter League win, 25-12, 25-12, 25-16. Vinnie Libroia added nine kills and Brandon Kofod had seven aces and five kills for NT (2-1 NFL). Matt Thompson had seven kills for NFHS (1-2).

N-W 3, Lockport 0

Ben Woodbury had 11 kills, four aces and two blocks as the Falcons earned the NFL win, 25-11, 25-21, 25-22. Shawn Haseley added five kills and two blocks and Lucas Kowalczyk had 34 assists for N-W (2-1 NFL). No information was available for LHS (1-2).

Grand Island 3, Lew-Port 0

Drew Lazelle finshed with five kills and six digs as the Vikings routed the Lancers, 25-8, 25-11, 25-5, in NFL play. Scott Holler added three kills and a block for GI (2-1 NFL). No information was available for Lew-Port (0-3).

Ken East 3, Ken West 1

Anthony Bagarozzi had 10 kills and 20 assists as the Bulldogs beat the rival Blue Devils in NFL action, 25-23, 25-21, 23-25, 25-21. Also for East (3-0 NFL), Kevin Whitehead had 13 kills, Todd Potter added nine blocks and Scott Whitehead chipped in with eight kills. Tyler Coker led West (1-2) with 12 kills and three blocks.

Girls Volleyball

Starpoint 3, Will. East 0

Julia Matters finished with 10 service points and eight kills in a 25-9, 25-9, 25-22 ECIC II win for the Lady Spartans. Sam Palka added 16 kills and Veronica Crosby had seven kills and five blocks for Starpoint (3-0 overall, 2-0 ECIC II). No information was provided for East (0-3).
