H.S. ROUNDUP (10/10/08): Grid Falcons hang on to beat Wolverines

NIAGARA FALLS —
Following Friday’s 27-21 win over rival Niagara Falls, the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons clinched a Section VI Class AA North playoff spot.
The Falcons (2-4 overall, 2-3 Class AA North) would have to rise to the occasion in the final seconds. Trailing by six with 19 seconds remaining, NFHS back Vince Smith came up two yards short of a first-down on the Falcons’ seven-yard-line.
The Wolverines dropped to 1-5 overall and 1-4 in AA North.
Depew 49, Newfane 22
Dan Gorski scored on runs of four and five yards in the first quarter, a frame in which the Wildcats (5-1 Class B North) put up 28 points on the board.
Newfane outscored Depew 16-7 in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to prevent them from falling to 0-6 on the season.
NT 42, St. Joe’s 10
Junior Aaron Davis scored three touchdowns — one rushing, one receiving and one on an interception return — in the win. Also for NT (6-0 overall), Brandon McClinsey and Cory Stuff rushed for touchdowns, while Dan Brandel had a 13-yard TD reception from quarterback Mike Tuzzo.
St. Joe’s (2-3) junior kicker Kevin Schwartz booted a 47-yard field goal in the first quarter.
Boys Soccer
Lockport 2, N-W 0
Jay Dry and Matt McCoy each had a goal for the Lions (12-3-2 overall, 9-2-2 NFL).
Chris Paradise made seven saves for the shutout, Andrew Granchelli had an assist and both Dan Sciandra and Mark Senay played well defensively.
The Falcons fell to 5-6-2 in the league.
Amherst 6, Starpoint 3
In a potential ECIC III title-clinching contest, the Spartans were derailed by the Tigers (5-4-2 ECIC III) behind goals from six different players. For Starpoint (10-5, 8-3), which will play Springville for the league championship on Wednesday, Lucas Smith had two goals and Rich Barrett also scored.
Girls Soccer
Lockport 3, N-W 2
Megan Kuczka, Codi Hall and Marissa Wright all scored for the Lady Lions as they improved to 5-12 overall and 4-9 in the NFL.
Katie Higgins had both goals for N-W (7-8-2, 5-7-1 NFL).
Wilson 3, Medina 0
Molly Curry netted the hat trick for Wilson (7-7-1 overall, 5-4-1 N-O) as they blanked Medina (5-7-1, 5-4-0).
Katie Kiely had the shutout in goal.
Newfane 3, Roy-Hart 0
Jessica Vail, Kendzie Wohleben and Gabby Balseca each had a goal as the Panthers imrpoved to 4-5-1 in the N-O.
Goalkeeper Andrea Adinolfe had eight saves for the shutout, while the Rams fell to 2-9.
Albion 8, Barker 0
Jamie Marling and Courtney Lusk each had a hat trick as Albion blanked Barker in N-O league action.
Emilie Edwards netted two goals in the win, while Ashley Walter got the shut-out.
Starpoint 5, WSE 0
Senior Teresa Delabio had all five goals to up her season toal to 39 as the Lady Spartans picked up the non-league win.
Kristen Giberson had three assists and Kristi Delabio added two assists for Starpoint (13-2-1 overall), which got a seven-save shutout from goalkeeper Chelsea Reed.
West Seneca East fell to 5-10.
Girls Tennis
ECIC Singles
In the first round of the ECIC singles tournament, Starpoint’s Jenna Maldiner spent a total of five hours, 40 minutes on the court over the course of her three matches.
She downed Eden’s Erica Arnold in her first contest, battled Williamsville South’s Ellen Meyers in a losing effort that took three hours, 20 minutes to complete, and went on to defeat Orchard Park’s Katie Pasier.
The Lady Spartans’ Chloe Withiam-Leitch lost to West Seneca East’s Arianna Musilli.
The tournament continues today.
Field Hockey
Clarence 5, Starpoint 1
Krista Raimondo had the lone goal for the visiting Spartans (3-7-3 ECIC B) off an assist from Aimee Larson.
Rachael Atkins scored two goals for Clarence (9-2-2), while Jenelle Larusso, Katelyn Lipka and Kayla Moni all scored a goal apiece.
Golf
Starpoint 339, Alden 340
Alden’s Derek Garigen was the medalist, shooting a 41 in a close match at Shawnee Golf Course.
Joe Spead shot a 44 for Starpoint (7-3 ECIC North Small Schools), and Rick Schlehr and Kyle Griffin each shot a 47.
Alden (7-3) and Starpoint finished tied for second in the league, with Depew winning the division with a 10-0 record.
Girls Swimming
Will. East 110, Starpoint 58
Sara Rogers took home first-place finishes in the 200 IM and 100 fly to lead the Lady Flames’ spark.
The 200 medley relay team for East (7-0) and Claire Sucharski in the 100 back set new pool records.
Starpoint, led by a 50 free win from Jessica Perone, dropped to 4-2 on the year.
Ken West 65, Lockport 29
Jacquie Sagasta (200 IM, 100 breast) and Marissa Dressel (100, 200 free) swam the Lady Blue Devils (3-0) to the NFL victory.
The Lady Lions’ (0-3) lone win came in the 400 free relay with Chelsea McKenna, Carmella DiMillo, Spencer Saraf and Caroline Tolli finishing in 3:56.69.
Girls Volleyball
Ken West 3, Lockport 0
Kelly Hess had eight kills and four digs as KW defeated Lockport 25-23, 25-17, 25-15.
Kalye Vazquez had 29 assists, four aces and six digs, and Taylor Lewandowski had six kills and eight digs for the Lady Blue Devils(13-0 overall, 11-0 NFL).
Amy Johnson had 13 kills and five blocks for Lockport (11-6, 8-3), Erin Miller had 10 kills and six digs, and Lea Sobieraski had five digs, five blocks and seven kills.
