H.S. ROUNDUP (10/13/09): LHS harriers take first through fourth at Bond Lake

LEWISTON Lockport’s Mike Feeney inished first with a time of 18:20 in Tuesday’s Niagara Frontier League dual meet against Kenmore West and Lewiston-Porter at Bond Lake No. 1.

The Lions went on to beat Lew-Port and Ken West handily, by identical 15-47 scores. The Blue Devils edged the Lancers in the third match, 23-33.

Brennon Cain, Bob Fogle and Wes Garver took spots two through four for the Lions (5-1 NFL).

Joel Melcher finished fifth for the Lancers (1-4 NFL).

Tom Zwick was the top finisher for West (1-4 NFL).

In the girls’ meet, Lockport ran away from both Lew-Port and Ken West, by identical 15-50 scores.

Maggie Russell won for Lockport (6-0 NFL) in 21:43, followed by teammates Ally Bartkowiak, Emilee Petti, Chelsea Turton and Claire Whalen.

Kelsey McGill finished fifth for Lew-Port (1-4 NFL) while Bronwen Leahey came in sixth for West (1-4).

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Barker 15, Medina 50Albion 17, Medina 44Barker 21, Albion 38

MEDINA — Albion’s Bryan Deibel won the boys 5K race in 17:10, but Barker runners placed second through fifth to win the meet handily.

Tyler Scheving of the Raiders was second followed by teammates Mike Lantinen, Erick Bennes and Ryan Lamb.

Steven Hann (sixth) was Medina’s top finisher.

Roy-Hart 27, Wilson 29Newfane 26, Wilson 29Newfane 21, Roy-Hart 34

Wilson’s Kevin Hanes won the N-O race in 17:35.

Newfane (5-1 N-O) was paced by the 2-3 finish of Nick Irr and Cody Burns as Roy-Hart’s Eddy Pfeil placed fourth. Wilson is now 1-4 while Roy-Hart is 2-3.

Starpoint 17, Will. South 40 Starpoint 20, Amherst 42

Zach Ahart (17:06), Kevin Carrigan, Tyler Dauria and Carl Daigler all ran well for Starpoint, which improved to 5-0 in ECIC III competition.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Albion 27, Barker 28

MEDINA — Albion’s Kaitlyn Klossner won the race in 21:41.

Barker’s Amber Sweeney was second, Albion’s Grace Rich was third and Barker placed fourth and fifth, respectively, with Carol White and Deanna Platt.

Newfane 15, Wilson 49Newfane 18, Roy-Hart 44

Newfane had a 1-2-4-5 finish with the efforts of Rachel Parker (20:14), Sarah Ziemba, Erin Hannah and Kayla Vochnewetch. Kelly Heuer placed third for Roy-Hart (0-4). Newfane improves to 5-0 while Wilson drops to 2-3.

Starpoint 21, Will. South 40 Amherst 26, Starpoint 29

Amy Cooper’s 19:45 gave her fourth place for Starpoint, while Livia Chase took the fifth spot for the Lady Spartans (4-1 ECIC III).

FIELD HOCKEY

Wilson 1, Akron 0

WILSON — Junior Kiersten Simmons netted the game’s only goal as the Lakewomen improved to 4-7 in the N-O with the upset win. Visiting Akron dropped to 9-2 in the league.

Sophomore Erika Moltrup earned the assist.

Earning her second shutout of the year in goal was junior Megan Buzzard.

Also playing well for Wilson was senior Anjolie Plante.

Barker 8, Newfane 0

BARKER — Crystal Mott netted four goals for the Lady Raiders, who moved to 11-0 in the N-O.

Rachel Anderson earned the shutout. The Lady Panthers fell to 5-6 in the N-O.

Ken East 2, Medina 0

Courtney Mack and Alex Valentino scored in the second half as the Bulldogs moved to 4-7 in the N-O. Sam Attea earned the shutout. Medina drops to 5-5-1.

Roy-Hart 1, Ken West 0

MIDDLEPORT — Kristi Pilhorn scored the game’s only goal and Alyssa Reixinger earned the shutout as the Lady Rams moved to 4-7 in the N-O.

Winless Ken West dropped to 0-11.

Boys Volleyball

Lockport 3, Ken East 1

Mike Kojsza had 13 kills and Sean Smith chipped in with 12 kills for the Lions as they won the NFL contest by scores of 25-21, 22-25, 25-13, 25-16 to move to 8-2 in the NFL.

The Bulldogs droppd to 3-7 in the NFL.

Girls Volleyball

Lockport 3, Ken East 0

TOWN OF TONAWANDA — Lockport’s Lea Sobieraski recorded 15 kills and two digs to lead the visiting Lady Lions to their NFL win by scores of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-14.

Emma Sobieraski had four kills for Lockport, which improved to 11-1 in league play. Becca Simmons led the Lady Bulldogs (3-9 NFL) with 14 digs.

Andrea Snitzer had 12 and Alex Dickson added 10.

Albion 3, Akron 0

AKRON — Maintaining a share of first place, Albion defeated Akron 25-15, 25-21, 25-13 on Tuesday to improve to 10-1 in Niagara-Orleans League competiton

Paige Golden had 16 service points, eight aces and 10 spiking kills; Jenn Knaak 13 points, three aces, three kills and nine assists for Albion which is 14-2 overall.

Brittany Hallett-Jonathan had five kills for Akron (5-7 N-O).

Barker 3, Medina 2

BARKER — The Lady Raiders improved to 1-10 in the N-O with their come-from behind, 10-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-16, 25-19 victory.

Roy-Hart 3, Newfane 2

MIDDLEPORT — Defending champion Roy-Hart kept pace with Albion atop the N-O standings at 10-1 by downing Newfane in five sets on Senior Night, 25-21, 25-23, 14-25, 19-25, 25-15.

Bridget Shanahan had 21 kills, 12 points and five blocks; Tanya Brewer 20 assists, 12 points and two aces; Chelsea Jamieson 17 points and three aces; Steph Wood seven points, three aces and three kills and Shelby Schwaibold four kills.

Newfane dropped to 8-3 in the N-O.

Golf

N-W wins NFL title

TOWN OF LOCKPORT — Niagara-Wheatfield senior Alex Buerger shot a 3-over-par 75 to earn medalist honors and help the Falcons to the team title at the annual Niagara Frontier League Tournament at Willwbrook Golf Course.

N-W had 427 strokes, while Kenmore East was second with 442. Lew-Port and Grand Island tied for third at 444, while Lockport (449), Kenmore West (466), Niagara Falls (472) and North Tonawanda (473) rounded out the team scores.

Individually, Lew-Port’s Matt Petrosian was second with a 76, Lockport’s Demond Stoll was third with a 77 and Niagara Falls’ Greg Bullock and Pierce Terrance of Kenmore East tied for fourth at 79.

Other state qualifiers were Mike Boss (Lew-Port, 80), Mike Davern (Kenmore East, 81), Brian Brink (Grand Island, 82), Alex Kammerer (Niagara-Wheatfield, 83) and Billy Lumadue (Niagara-Wheatfield, 83).
