H.S. GIRLS TENNIS: Four Lady Lions advance to sectionals

Four Lockport High School girls varsity tennis players will compete Oct. 24 in the prestigious Section VI Tournament at Sportsplex.

Senior co-captains Lauren Currie and Mallory McIntosh, along with outstanding singles players Miller Barmasse and Andrea LIcata, will represent the Lady Lions and their veteran head coach, John Beatty.

On Tuesday, Currie and McIntosh paired up foir only their second time this season, but it was a fruitful collaboration for both at the Niagara Frontier League Sectional Doubles Qualifying Tournament.

In their opening round match against Kelsey Sargent and Julie Stewart of Lewiston-Porter, Currie and McIntosh won 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-3) in a close, hard-fought match.

In the quarterfinals, Currie and McIntosh faced the No. 1 seeded tandem Allie Diamond and Avery Fisher of Kenmore West. Diamond and Fisher had beaten McIntosh and Gianna Viola, Lockport’s top doubles team, twice during the regular sseason.

But on Tuesday, the tables turned as Currie and McIntiosh won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

Advancing to the semifinals, Lockport was defeated by the tournament’s No. 5 seeded team Alexandra Buscaglia and Kaitie Samland, 4-6, 6-7 (0-7).

In the consolation match to determine third and fourth place, Currie and McIntosh defeated Kenmore West’s Emily and Tara Lemen, 8-6.

Joining Currie and McIntosh at sectionals will be Barmasse, who finished 10-4 at first singles; and Andrea Licata, who was 11-3 at second singles.
