H.S. ROUNDUP (10/14/08): Lions blank Lancers on ‘Senior Day’

LOCKPORT Junior striker Matt McCoy netted three goals Tuesday, leading the Lockport Lions past the visiting Lewiston-Porter Lancers, 5-0, topping Niagara Frontier League boys soccer action.

The tallies in the Lions’ regular season finale gave McCoy 20 markers on the season. The annual sectional seeding meeting to determine Lockport’s post-season schedule is at 10 a.m. Saturday at the home of chairman Art Jaspe.

Also scoring for head coach Jeff Hulshoff’s Lions (13-3-2 overall, 10-2-2 NFL) on “Senior Day” were junior Andrew Granchelli (10th goal of the season) and junior midfielder Jimmy May (3).

Junior keeper Chris Paradise made four saves to earn the shutout in goal for the blue and gold. Paradise’s eight shutouts was an NFL best this year.

Also playing well for Lockport was junior midfielder Jordan Kurbs in a game in which Lockport’s defense dominated throughout.

Lions seniors are Jon Greig, Dan Sciandra, Angelo DiMillo, Jay Dry, Andrew Smist, Marc Farfaglia, Jordan Small and Clay Case.

The Lions finished second in the NFL this season, a half game behind league champion Kenmore East, who also won on Tuesday to finish 10-1-3 in the league.

The Lancers, who have one league game remaining against Kenmore West, dropped to 7-8-2 overall and 5-6-2 in the league.

Ken East 6, Ken West 1

Casey Sheehan had three goals and Phil Pinzone added a pair of goals as the Bulldogs clinched the 2008 NFL championship.

Dillon Olivieri also scored for Ken East, while Cody Rouse added a pair of assists.

C.J. Brunner had the lone goal for the Blue Devils (7-8-2, 4-8-1 NFL).

Grand Island 3, N-W 1

Shaun Winter, Jordan Gibson and Christian Gibson had goals for the Vikings (9-7-2, 7-5-2 NFL).

Jeremy Figler made eight saves in the win.

Dillon Fedak scored for Niagara-Wheatfield (6-9-3, 4-8-2 NFL).

Girls Soccer

Starpoint 2, Amherst 1

Brittany Bratek had the winning goal with eight minutes left as the Lady Spartans (12-2-1 overall, 8-1-1 ECIC III) handed Amherst (14-3, 8-1) its first league loss of the season.

Nicole Borner also scored for Starpoint, while Chelsea Reed made seven saves to earn the win in goal.

Wilson 7, Barker 0

The Lakewomen got a pair of hat tricks from Molly Curry and Jess Foster en route to the victory.

Kari Stoelting had a lone goal for the Lakewomen (10-6-1 overall, 6-4-1 in N-O) while Katie Kiely and Amber Racette each spent time in net to share the shutout win.

Kaitlyn Thompson played well on defense for Wilson.

Barker fell to 0-10 in the N-O.

Medina 3, Roy-Hart 0

GASPORT — Alishia Foss scored what proved to be the game winner for Medina (7-4 N-O) just three minutes in off an assist from Shannon Horgan.

Laura Dellinger and Sharon Husung also scored for Medina.

Alisiha Newman made nine saves to earn the shutout in goal.

The Lady Rams dropped to 2-10 in the N-O.

Lew-Port 1, Lockport 0

YOUNGSTOWN — Hayley Besaw scored the winning goal for the Lady Lancers (10-4-1, 8-4-1 NFL) on a pass from Hannah Matthews with 4:10 remaining.

Nikki Mohkiber made 16 saves in goal for Lew-Port.

Ellen Finn stopped 20 shots for the Lady Lions (4-10 NFL).

NT 5, Niagara Falls 1

Steve Sabo got his 100th career coaching win as Amanda Smyth had four goals and an assist for the Lady Lumberajcks.

FIELD HOCKEY

Medina 1, Wilson 0

MEDINA — Bailey Hartway scored the game winner for the Lady Mustangs (6-7 N-O) with 6:15 remaining off an assist from Chasity Chinn.

Paige Green earned the shutout in goal for Medina at Vets Perk.

The Lakewomen dropped to 4-8-1 in the league

Barker 8, Ken East 0

KENMORE — Alexandra Gancasz and Brittany Cordaro each scored two goals for Barker, which locked up yet another league title in undefeated (12-0-1) fashion.

Sienna Dear, Crystal Mott, Ayssa Hare and Megan Kieffer also scored for head coach Jude Otto’s team.

Rachel Anderson earned the shutout in goal.

The Lady Bulldogs dropped to 3-9-1 in the N-O.

Newfane 2, Roy-Hart 1

NEWFANE — First-half goals by Molly Coakley, on a penalty stroke, and Megan Coakley, lifted the Lady Panthers (7-5-1 N-O) past the Lady Rams (8-3-2 N-O).

Akron 9, Ken West 0

AKRON — Kierstyn Sturmer scored five goals and Shannon Winney earned the shutout in the net to lead the Lady Tigers (9-2-2 N-O) past the Lady Blue Devils (0-13 NFL).

GIRLS SWIMMING

N-W 94, Lockport 92

Senior stand-out Caroline Tolli was a double individual winner for the Lady Lions (2-2 NFL).

Other winners for LHS were Ashley Keller (diving), Chelsea McKenna (100 freestyle) and Erica Crane (100 breaststroke).

Marissa Oakey set a new school record in the 500 freestyle for Niagara-Wheatfield (2-2 NFL), despite finishing second to Tolli.

Boys Cross Country

Lockport 24, Grand Island 32

In a battle between the Niagara Frontier League’s top three teams at Reservoir Park, the Lions picked up a pair of wins to take the regular season crown with an unblemished 7-0 record.

GI (6-1) nipped the Falcons (5-2) in the other matchup.

GI’s Evan Tsembelis crossed the finish first in 16:39.

He was followed by Alex Lennert (Lockport), Drew Perilli (Lockport), Nick Masiello (Grand Island) and Jeremy Orton (Lockport).

The top four finishers were from the undefeated Spartans (4-0 ECIC). They were led by racew winner Zack Ahart (16.36).

Kevin Hanes of Wilson (2-5 N-O) won the race in 17:23.

He was followed by Mike Reubens (W), Bryan Deibel (A), Josh Platte (A) and Cameron Harvey (A). The TIgers are 4-3 in the N-O and Medina is 1-6.

Vincent Donner of Roy-Hart was the race winner in 17:24.5. Rounding out the top five were Cody Burns of Newfane (4-1 N-O) and Akron’s Eric Kowalik, Nick Moore and Ben Schafer.

Girls Cross Country

The top three finishers were Lady Vikings (7-0 FL). The race winner was Martina Tsembelis (20:59), followed by Dominique DeGregario and Megan Carpie. Fourth and fifth place went to Lockport (6-1 NFL) runners in Allie Bartkowiak and Sarah Bartkowiak.

The Lady Falcons dropped to 4-3 in the NFL.

AMHERST — The race winer from Starpoint (3-2 ECIC) was Lauren Scarupa (19:30). She was followed by teammates Courtney Laderer, Cassie Weldon and Audrey Collins.

The Lady TIgers dropped to 4-1 in the league.

Newfane 23, Akron 32

Newfane 15, Roy-Hart 50

Newfane remains undefeated (7-0) in the N-O League.

The winner of the race was Rachel Parker from Newfane setting a new Newfane course record in a time of 19:57.7. Rounding out the top five were Kelly Heuer of Roy-Hart, Ellen Goldhawk of Akron, Emma Wilson of Akron, and Erin Hannah of Newfane.

Wilson 26, Albion 29

The top five race winners were Albion’s Hannah Moffett (20:30), followed by Amber Lehman (W), Kate Klossner (A), Kari Kopchick (W), Bridgette Austin (W)

The Lakewomen improved to 6-1 in the N-O. Albion dropoped to 5-2.
