H.S. GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: Lady Lions blank Ken East in straight sets

LOCKPORT Lockport High School senior Amy Johnson put her height and good leaping ability to work on Tuesday, sparking the Lockport Lady Lions girls varsity volleyball team past visiting Kenmore East in straight sets, 25-14, 25-16, 25-23, topping Niagara Frontier League action.

Johnson finished with nine kills, six aces and five digs as Lockport improved to 9-3 in the league.

Also for the Lady Lions, Lea Sobieraski had five blocks, nine kills and four digs, Katelyn Prue notched 21 assists and seven digs; and Erin Miller added three kills and two digs.

For the Lady Bulldogs (2-10 NFL), Alex Dickson had 13 digs and Summer Amoia added eight assists.

In the junior varsity match on Tuesday, Lockport’s Lady Cubs downed Ken East in straight sets, 25-19, 25-13, 25-18.

Lauren Sibolski recorded nine aces for LHS.

Wilson 3, N. Catholic 0

WILSON — Molly Bloom racked up nine aces on 15 service points to lead the Lakewomen to Tuesday’s 25-12, 25-17, 25-15 Niagara-Orleans League girls volleyball victory.

Jessica Curry added four blocks for Wilson (4-12 overall, 3-8 N-O). Katrina Crossley was 9-for-9 serving for the Patriots (1-17, 1-11 MMAA), with Erica Caso setting well and Cory Catanese providing some stellar passes.

Roy-Hart 3, Newfane 1

NEWFANE — The undefeated (11-0) Lady Rams locked up the 2008 N-O title with a 25-13, 21-25, 25-16, 32-30 road victory.

The Lady Panthers dropped to 8-3 in the N-O.

Michelle Quackenbush served up four straight key points to pull Roy-Hart even and then Bridget Shanahan served up the set and match winner.

“It’s a cliché but they kids just don’t give up,” Roy-Hart coach Bill Holahan said.

“They didn’t want it to go a fifth set and they really came back. I’m just so pleased not to go five sets and for us to come back like that. It was a great win.”

Also for R-H, Shanahan finished with 12 points, 22 kills, seven blocks and 21 digs, Ashley Scrinzi had 11 points, 16 kills ,17 digs and two blocks; Stephanie Wood recorded 12 points, three aces and two blocks; Molly McEvoy had 45 assists and 10 digs; Shelby Schwaibold added five kills and 13 digs and Quackenbush chipped in with nine points and 29 digs.

Medina 3, Barker 1

Trailing 14-10, Medina (2-9 N-O) went on a 14-2 scoring tear to lock up the match deciding fourth set, as Kelsey Matuszak had four spiking kills for points, Kelly Jo Pritchard three and Maggie Balcerzak three service aces to highlight that decisive run.

Brandy Adams had a big night for Barker (0-11 N-O) with eight aces and five kills.

Albion 3, Akron 0

ALBION — Lisa Bierdeman had 17 service points and 18 assists to lead the Lady Purple Eagles to their 25-15, 25-12, 25-11 win.

Ginny Cole added seven kills for the winners (9-2 N-O).

N-W 3, N. Falls 0

Jessica Crooks had 10 kills and Kailey Walck added 19 assists for the Lady Falcons (7-5 NFL). The scores were 25-9, 25-17, 25-15.

For the Lady Wolverines (0-12 NFL), Michelle Granieri had four kills.

Ken West 3, Lew-Port 1

Lauren Kirby had eight kills and four aces for the lady Blue Devils (12-0 NFL). The scores were 25-19, 23-25, 25-21, 25-19.

For the Lady Lancers (2-10 NFL), L-P (2-10, 2-10), Genna Haseley had eight blocks and Shannon Lawson added seven aces.
