It was “steady as she goes” for the Lockport High School girls bowling team in its 2008-09 Niagara Frontier League opener at Allie Brandt Lanes on Tuesday.
Senior Amber Gunby, a consistent force on the Lady Lions for the past three seasons, fired singles of 227 and 210, en route to a 631 series, sparking the defending league champions past visiting Kenmore West, 7-0, at Allie Brandt Lanes.
The LHS boys team lost to the Blue Devils, 5-2, in their NFL bowling opener.
“This is Amber’s fourth year on the team and she’s been a steady, three-year starter for me,” said LHS head coach Matt Burt.
“She’s just a solid bowler — someone we can always count on.”
Other top bowlers for the Lady Lions included Sam Stachura-Lee and Bridget Masiello. Stachura-Lee fired single games of 191, 203 and 194 for a 588 set, while Masiello added a 193 single. The Lady Lions (1-0 NFL) out-pinned the Lady Blue Devils convincingly, 3,175 to 2,708.
Colleen Blake led the Ken West girls (0-1 NFL) with 209-200--544.
Meanwhile, LHS boys team captain Jamison Neglia rolled a 179 single and 699 series; and teammate Matt McKee added a 259--698, but the Lions dropped their NFL opener, losing the pin count by a narrow 3,929-3,874 margin.
Also for the LHS boys (0-1 NFL), Greg Priebe bowled 249-232--676 and Evan Burke chipped in with 230--611.
“The girls are right on track and our boys also bowled very well,” Burt said after the match.
“Our 3,784 total for the boys was very good. You don’t normally lose a match with a pin total like that. We averaged 215 per man today. I can’t be upset with that.”
Topping Ken West was John Stopa with a 236-257-232--725. Ron Ricketts added 259--659 for the Blue Devils (1-0 NFL).
Next up for Lockport is a road match at the Rapids Bowling Center at 4 p.m. Thursday against Niagara-Wheatfield.
