PAL awards set for Sunday

The Niagara Police Athletic League (PAL) will hold its 30th annual Sports Awards Dinner at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Como Restaurant in Niagara Falls. The event honors the top male and female prep athletes from 13 local high schools along with several other special awards. The prep athletes will be revealed later this week. Tickets for the event are available at the PAL or at the door. This year’s special award honorees are:

Sportsperson of the Year

Marc Daul will be honored after implementing three new athletic programs — elementary school basketball league, elementary school soccer clinics and high school boys lacrosse — within the City of Niagara Falls. Daul volunteered as a scheduling coordinator, gym supervisor and referee.

Chief Williams Award

Kevin Kulikowski will be honored during his 11th season as a volunteer assistant coach with the Grand Island boys basketball program. Kulikowski is also the Director of Young Life Ministries in Western New York. The cancer survivor is a husband and father of three children.

Female Athlete of the Year

Lockport graduate Bridgette Burke will be honored after being inducted into the Daemen College Athletic Wall of Fame for her achievements on the basketball floor. Burke is the school’s seventh all-time leading scorer and ranks in the top 10 in five other categories.

Male Athlete of the Year

Lockport graduate Corey Balcerzak will honored after being named a Division III All-American offensive lineman at St. John Fisher. Balcerzak helped the Cardinals rack up 4,511 yards of total offense. He has been invited to participated in two pre-draft combines this spring.

Comeback Athlete of the Year

North Tonawanda’s Delaney Laper will be honored after returning this season from a torn ACL, which she suffered during the 2010 sectionals. Laper holds school records for kills, digs and matches played. She was a first team All-Western New York pick this past fall.

Board of Directors Awards

The 2011 Barker boys cross country team will be honored after winning its second state championship in the past three years. The team included Jordan bender, Tyler Scheving, Marc Delamarter, Anthony Diez, Michael Lantinen, Jed Platt, Sergio Cruz, head coach Paul DerSarkissian and assistant coach Sharon Lamb.

n Scheving will also be honored individually for winning a Division II (small school) state championship in the 800 meters during last spring’s track and field season.
