Reid hurls Wilson past Albion

H.S. ROUNDUP (4/5/12): Starpoint ball clubs sweep non-league foes.

WILSON — Gaining a split on the week in one-run Niagara-Orleans League baseball decisions, Wilson edged past Albion, 6-5, Thursday, leaving both teams at 1-1 in league competition.

Chris Reid pitched the complete-game victory on Thursday for the Lakemen, who rebounded from an 11-10 loss at Royalton-Hartland on Tuesday.

Reid struck out nine, gave up eight hits, only allowed one earned run and didn’t allow any runs after the third inning.

Also for the winners, Dan Nugent knocked in two runs and had an RBI single, Cam Sidote smacked an RBI triple, Mike Thompson scored two runs and hit a double, Taylor Thilk cracked an RBI single and Pat Diez (1-for-2) also had an RBI single.

Tied 2-2, Wilson moved on top to stay with four runs in the bottom of the second inning on a double by Derek Martin, a sacrifice by Diez, a triple by Sidote and a single by Thilk.

Albion answered back with three runs in the top of the third on a two-run error and an RBI single by Connor Barleben to cut the deficit to 6-5, but the Purple Eagles wouldn’t cross home plate again.

Albion had two runners aboard with one out in the fourth on a single by Steve Holler and a walk, but Wilson got out of trouble on an inning-ending double play triggered by shortstop Mike Thompson.

In the fifth, the Purple Eagles got runners to second and third after a single by Jon Warne and a walk, but Reid bore down to get out of the jam with a clutch inning-ending strikeout.

Albion got two runners aboard with no outs in the seventh on a single by Warne and a fielder’s choice, but Reid and the Wilson defense got out of trouble on a pop out, a strikeout and a line out to Thompson.

Wilson’s other two runs came in the first inning on a two-run single by Dan Nugent after a double by Thompson, an error and a walk had loaded the bases.

Albion, which scored a run in the top of the first on singles by Matt Quider and Ryan Golden and a fielders choice play, tied the game with a run in the second on a double by Travis Downs.

• N-O BASEBALL

Akron 21, Barker 8

AKRON — Eight-run scoring bursts inthe first and fifth innings were the difference as Akron evened its N-O record at 1-1 with a big win over visiting Barker (0-2 N-O).

Jake Bower had a two-run single for the Tigers in the first inning, as did Noah Diebel in the fifth.

Bower and Carl Baker both finished with four hits and Drew Borchert three.

Austin Blackley had a single and double for the Raiders.

• NON-LEAGUE BASEBALL

Starpoint 8, Lew-Port 1

PENDLETON — Austin Speaker went 3-of-4 with three RBI and pitched three shutout innings to lead Starpoint in Thursday’s non-league win.

Cory Regnet and Matt Miller each had two hits and three stolen bases, and Zach Monell went 2-of-4 with an RBI double.

Korey Schwab earned the win, allowing five hits and one earned run over four innings.

• N-O SOFTBALL

Roy-Hart 9, Newfane 1

NEWFANE — Giving up only one run for the second game in a row, Roy-Hart roared past Newfane on Thursday in the lone N-O softball game.

Brianna Walker scattered five hits and struck out six to lead the way for Roy-Hart (2-0 N-O), which had bested Wilson 14-1 Monday in their N-O opener.

Sam Brown and Walker both banged out two hits and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Lady Rams at the plate.

Roy-Hart wasted little time in taking the lead for good, scoring four runs in the first inning highlighted by a two-run single by Walker.

Newfane slipped to 0-2 in N-O action.

• NON-LEAGUE SOFTBALL

Starpoint 14, Wilson 3

PENDLETON — Winning pitcher sophomore Ashley Owens fanned 11 in the circle with just one walk to leaad head coach Joe Hill’s Lady Spartans (1-2) in Thursday’s non-league victory.

Also for the winners, Emily Whitman went 3-for-5, Mackenzie Britton went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and Mikenna Pelloth was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.

For Wilson (1-2), junior Lindsay Bryer was 3-for-3.
