Laxtrodinary Program

Lockport's boys lacrosse team & program are one of a kind

LOCKPORT —

One of the most successful coaches in Section VI boys lacrosse doesn’t win all the games, nor win all the titles. Yet he’s accomplished more in his coaching tenure than most can brag about in Western New York.
Scott Reddinger started from scratch a lacrosse program at Lockport High School and what he’s accomplished in less than 10 years it sometimes takes other schools and sports programs a lifetime to even dream of.
Today, Reddinger’s Lions aren’t just a team representing a Lincoln Avenue high school on the city’s south side. No, Reddinger’s team and the Lockport program he devotes so much time to and wears on his sleeve is now surrounded by a variety of feeder programs and summer camps and features his masterpiece — a special, spectacularly successful annual “Community Lacrosse Day” that separates his team, Lions boosters and this supportive school district from all the rest.
There’s always room for improvement on the field when you finish 3-14, as the Lions did in 2013, but Reddinger’s team continues to grow and show signs of improvement, as players who’ve been exposed to the unique sport at younger ages begin to trickle into the varsity roster.
An 11-10 overtime victory at Lewiston-Porter last week to open this season was significant as the team and program continues to look positively at its future.
Lockport will once again compete in Section VI Class A this spring. Divisional opponents are Frontier, Lancaster, Orchard Park, West Seneca West (up from Class B); and Clarence, whom the Lions host at 5 p.m. today;
“A lot of the games we play in, usually, because of our youth, we’re either winning by a handful or losing by a lot. So for our players to be in a close match and see them fight through the adversity of up-and-down, neck-and-neck action and the nervousness of being on the field for the very first time all year — that overtime win was important to us when you consider our opponents had been practicing on a turf field for three weeks,” Reddinger said.
