Tune-up victory for Lady Lions

All eyes on Niagara Falls HS and possible NFL title

LOCKPORT —

If you’re going to easily win a game you were expected to easily win, you might as well do it with a solid effort and Lockport did just that in Tuesday night’s 53-24 Niagara Frontier League girls basketball victory over visiting Lewiston-Porter.
Eleven fourth quarter points by the winless Lady Lancers made the game appear closer than it actually was before a modest crowd in the Lady Lions’ Den.
With the win, head coach Karen Catalano’s Lady Lions improved to 11-1 in the league and are 13-2 overall.
“We set the tempo defensively, I thought, which has been out forte all year,” Catalano said.
Led by Alyssa Wagner’s 10 first quarter points, the Lady Lions jumped out to an 18-3 lead after the first eight minutes. Catalano emptied the bench after that and Lockport spread the wealth in the second quarter with six different players getting points, taking a comfortable 33-8 halftime lead.
Lady Lions junior Angela Sammarco found her range in the second half with seven points, adding two assists in a solid all-around effort as the Lady Lions cruised to the win.
Wagner finished with a game-high 14 points and added 9 rebounds and 4 steals in another solid effort at both ends of the floor.
Also for Lockport, Sara Franco added 9 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 blocked shots, senior Kennedy Smith was all over the floor with 3 rebounds, 3 steals and an assist, sophomore Brooklyn Camarra twisted and turned inside for 9 points, freshman point guard Carissa DiTullio took it to the basket with 7 points, adding a pair of steals and assists, senior Roserita DiMillo had a steal and an assist to go along with her free-throw, freshman Kathryn Krchniak had two points and an assist, junior DeAnna Wiley added 4 points with a steal and an assist; and Hailey Bechtold chipped in with a steal and an assist.
