New era, new outlook

Colleen Byrne brings experience, winning attitude to LHS

LOCKPORT —

There's a fresh face on the Lockport girls lacrosse sidelines these days and with her comes a fresh perspective and loads of experience.
Syracuse native Colleen Byrne is the new head coach of the Lockport High School girls varsity lacrosse team, which has finally gotten an opportunity to practice outdoors this week with the weather breaking.
Byrne was a six-year varsity lacrosse starter at Bishop-Ludden High School in a part of New York state where the sport is king — or this case, queen.
“We've got a great team atmosphere here. The girls believe in each other and work very hard. They make my job easy,” Byrne said. “We're expecting to have a good record. We want to be a team to be reckoned with.”
The Lady Lions, 5-11 overall a year ago, will open their 2013 Section VI Class A season at 5 p.m. today at Niagara Falls.
Following games at Eden on Friday and at Williamsville East on Monday, Lockport will host Grand Island in its home opener a week from today at 5 p.m. on April 17.
Among Lockport's many key players this spring are the team's three co-captains, Roserita DiMillo, Lizzie Bull and Jamie Dimond.
DiMillo, a First Team All-Niagara Frontier League All-Star as a sophomore last year, brings tremendous all-around athleticism at midfield, along with seniors Bull and Dimond, both Second Team all-stars in 2012.
Other key Lockport returners include First Team All-NFL player Jillian Golding, senior defender Paige Kelkenberg and keeper Azlia Douglas, a Third Team NFL all-star last year.
“The weather has been the only thing that's really hurt us. Today (Tuesday) is only the fourth time we've been outside all year. The weather breaking has been a blessing,” Byrne said.
“This is a fun team to coach. I didn't lose a lot and I've got a lot to work with. We've got several players — and quite a few juniors — who are great players. We're hoping for a winning record.”
