Wilson '9' beats previously-unbeaten City Honors on the road

BUFFALO —

Wilson’s Chris Reid and Mike Thompson combined for 11 strikeouts Tuesday as the No. 9 Lakemen knocked off previously-undefeated and top-seeded City Honors, 5-2, in a Section VI Class B-2 quarterfinal baseball game at McCarthy Park.
Reid, who pitched three shutout innings in Monday’s 19-7 pre-quarterfinal win over Cleveland Hill, started the game, giving up two runs and striking out six in four innings.
He ran into trouble with a 5-2 lead in the top of the fifth, loading the bases with no outs, but Thompson came on and struck out the four and five batters before ending the inning with a groundout. Thompson pitched the rest of the game, striking out two middle hitters then getting a ground out.
At the plate, Reid doubled and drove in a run, while Hunter Howland added a pair of two-baggers.
“We didn’t have a ton of hits ourselves, but got some key hits, especially with two outs,” Wilson coach Mark Kurtz said. “We only struck out three times.”
The Lakemen travel to Niagara-Orleans League rival No. 4 Akron for Friday’s semifinals. Wilson went 0-2 against Akron in the regular season, losing 7-1 and 8-7.
