Ovechkin, Caps outlast Sabres

Green scores OT goal as Washington beats Buffalo, 5-4

BUFFALO —

Alex Ovechkin capped a four-point night by setting up Mike Green's goal one minute into overtime to give the Washington Capitals a 5-4 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday.
Ovechkin had two goals and two assists for his 14th multipoint outing of the season. Green had two goals and an assist and Troy Bouwer also scored in a game the Capitals never trailed but squandered a 2-0 lead. Washington (24-21-8) was coming off a 5-0 win at Montreal on Saturday and won consecutive games since Jan. 9-10.
Cody Hodgson had two goals and Christian Ehrhoff and rookie Phil Varone, with the first of his career, scored for Buffalo. The Sabres (14-30-8) dropped to 1-4-3 in their past seven.
The decisive goal came after Ennis and Matt Moulson had their 2-on-1 break broken up inside the Capitals blue line.
Martin Erat fed the puck to Ovechkin up the left wing. Driving into the circle, Ovechkin faked a shot before sending a pass across to Green, who snapped it into the open side.
Ovechkin is showing no signs of the lower body injury that sidelined him for two games last week. With a goal and assist against Montreal, the Capitals captain now has six points in his past two, and combined for eight goals and six assists in his past 11.
He also upped his career total to 790 points, moving into second on the Capitals' list, one ahead of Mike Gartner.
The Capitals squandered a 2-0 first-period edge, and were unable to hold a 4-3 lead through two periods in which they outshot the Sabres 29-14.
Hodgson tied the game 6:48 into the third with a strong individual play, and with a delayed penalty being called against Washington forward Jason Chimera. Getting the puck in the right circle, Hodgson weaved his way past two defenders and lifted a backhander over goalie Braden Holtby's right shoulder.
