Lax Lions are state champions

Reddinger's squad named top NYS scholar athletes

LOCKPORT —

The Lockport High School boys varsity lacrosse team has earned a prestigious award from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association — the Scholar Athlete Team Award.
Members of head coach Scott Reddinger’s Lions are Andrew Bronson, Zachary Brown, Glenn Cascia, Brennan D’Angelo, Zach Dewey, Connor Evans, Ryan Fisher, Nick Garlock, Malik Harden, Christian Hiam, Richard Hillman, Billy Hodil;
Nathan Landrigan, Matthew Linderman, William Lyons, Chris MacDonald, Tracy Maracle-Pitrello, Zack Montanaro, Travis Ness, Sam Nowak, Dillon Olear, Anthony Pellicano, Nick Perilli, Joel Schlitzer, Ryan Smorol, Tyler Stickney and Kyle Teeter.
“This award speaks volumes to our students’ talents, both scholastically and athletically,” said Lockport schools superintendent Michelle T. Bradley.
“It takes great effort and dedication to be able to balance all of the activities in the classroom and on the field. The LHS boys varsity lacrosse team is well deserving of this recognition and has given the Lockport City School District another great reason to swell with pride.”
In the 2012-13 academic year, 23 of Lockport’s 26 varsity sports teams earned the distinction of being a state scholar athlete team, but only one can be considered a state champion. Out of the 327 varsity teams that play boys lacrosse in the Empire State, the Lions had the highest academic average in the state with a calculated team average of 95.85.
“As an athletic department, we work very hard trying to teach and demonstrate how the lifelong skills of hard work and good character will payoff in great results,” said Lockport athletics director Patrick M. Burke.
“All of our coaches are extremely diligent and put a great deal of emphasis on the scholar portion of scholar-athlete. I’m extremely proud of our team and particularly appreciative of the hard work that coach Reddinger puts in with his guys. It is truly a great honor for our school district.”
