Targus commits to Cazenovia

Barker senior will swim, play softball in college

BARKER —

Barker senior student-athlete Brooke Targus will continue her swimming and softball career at Cazenovia College this fall.
Targus, accompanied by her parents, Mark and Lauri Targus, Barker coaches and Barker’s athletics director Dave Carson, signed a National Letter of Intent last week to attend Cazenovia, near Syracuse. She plans to swim and play softball for the Lady Wildcats.
Targus was a captain and Team Most Valuable Player for Barker girls swim team last winter, under head coach Mike Gendrue; and served as a captain on Barker’s softball team, under head coach Bill Moeller.
“Brooke swam varsity for four years and was captain her senior year. She’s a versatile swimmer who excelled in all strokes and especially the 100 backstroke, 100 butterfly, and the 200 individual medley,” Gendrue said.
Added Moeller, “Brooke was a returning veteran for our team in 2014. She was one of our captains and definitely our defensive leader on the field. Brooke has a strong aptitude for the game of softball. She always knew what was going on and was a great communicator to the rest of her teammates.
“She spent time at both second base, as well as behind the plate for us,” Moeller said. “ Her versatility allowed us to have a balanced defensive attack this was key to our success this year. Brooke was voted to the Honorable Mention All-League team this year.”
Cazenovia College swim coach William Houser said he was very excited to hear Brooke will be joining the Lady Wildcats next year.
“She is going to be a great addition to the team,” Houser said. “She is one of our top incoming freshman and with her times from high school will be our second best IMer and top butterflyer.”
Cazenovia softball coach Christopher Comino also said he looked forward to the addition of Targus.
“My assistant and I have a good feeling about Brooke and we feel she can help us out,” Comino said. “She is going to have the opportunity to play right away here. She is a great kid and we feel she is going to help us take that step to the next level.”
