Canal Fishing Derby is July 2-13

Twenty-fourth annual family-oriented event begins next week

Twenty four years ago, a Gasport man walked into the offices of the Union-Sun & Journal — then at South Transit and Summit streets — and talked about making use of the quiet historic waterway in his backyard by starting a canal derby.
Steve Harrington isn't just old school, he's a caveman, obtaining all of the necessary sponsorships and requirements man-to-man, refusing to use a phone, driving tirelessly to meet all of his dozens of sponsors face-to-face.
And it became a instant hit.
Harrington's derby is now a staple locally, with thousands competing each year — some coming from out-of-state — for the 12-day event, which includes daily prizes and hidden (tagged fish) prizes.
Since 1990, Harrington's goal of creating a type of local derby that unites families and friends and makes positive use of the canal have been recognized by lawmakers throughout the state. Sen. George Maziarz (62nd District) and Steve Hawley (139th Assembly District) are among those sponsoring a tagged fish this year.
This year's Erie Barge Canal Fishing Derby will run from July 2 (a week from today) to July 13 on canal waters between Albion and the Tonawandas. Participants are divided into two divisions, adult and kids (14-under), with seven divisions of fish: bass, walleye, Northern Pike, bullhead, carp, sheephead and catfish.
Once again, more than $20,000 in prizes and merchandise are available. The grand prize for youths (14-under) is a new canal trail bike, while the adult grand prize is a new fishing boat, motor and trailer. The cost to enter is $7 for kids and $12 for adults. The family cost is $22 and the daily cash bash is $5.
You can enter the 2014 derby at any one of the following locations:
• Les Allen Live Bait, 350 Hawley St., Lockport (433-8983)
• Harrington's, 7963 Telegraph Road, Gasport (425-8144 or 830-8434)
