Collegiate ‘Field’ of Dreams

Barker's Olivia Denny will play field hockey at the University of Rochester

BARKER —

Barker High School's outstanding senior student-athlete Olivia Denny has committed to playing field hockey next fall at the University of Rochester.
Denny, accompanied by her parents, Mel and Meg Denny, signed a National Letter of Intent this week to attend the University of Rochester on an academic and sports scholarship. Among others attending a brief ceremony at the high school were Barker athletics director David Carson and Lady Raiders field hockey head coach Jeff Costello.
This past season, Olivia earned First Team All-Niagara-Orleans League honors, All-Western New York honors and All-State honors.
She was a member of the Lady Raiders dynasty field hockey program since the 7th grade and was a key player on four N-O championship teams, four Section VI Class C championship teams; and three Far West Regional championship teams.
“Olivia is the type of player who gives maximum effort and commitment to better herself and her team year round,” Costello said.
“As a player in several off season development programs and tournaments, Olivia has always pushed herself to be the best player possible, challenges her teammates to be successful and shows a genuine love for the game. She has also excelled in the classroom. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to coach her at both the junior varsity and varsity levels and on the basketball court as well.
“Her contributions to both programs have been immeasurable. As she transitions to the college game and college life, I have no doubt that she will continue her success and strive to meet her goals. The University of Rochester is gaining a real talent with a bright future,” Costello said.
Olivia was also an outstanding basketball and softball player at Barker. In basketball, Barker’s four-year starting point guard earned Second Team All-League honors over the past three seasons.  She also finished her basketball career representing Barker in the Exceptional Senior Game.  She is a two-time First Team All-League player in softball and has been a starter on the varsity since the 8th grade.
