Grid Lions set for the Sal

Winless Niagara Falls hosts Lockport at noon Saturday

You can throw out the records when the Lockport football Lions tackle the rival Niagara Falls Wolverines at noon this Saturday at Sal Maglie Stadium.
Lions head coach Greg Bronson said the last thing he wants his 2-1 team to do is take the winless Wolverines for granted. Lockport enters 1-1 in Class AA (2-1 overall), while the Wolverines are 0-3 in the division and overall.
“They’ve gotten closer to winning each week,” Bronson said. “They’re getting better as they’re going along, so I’m sure they’re highly motivated to break through and get a win this week. Right now, they’re in a group of teams that doesn’t have a win yet and with just one team in the division not making the playoffs, I’m sure that they’re strongly motivated not being that team.”
The Lions are coming off their first loss of the 2013 campaign, a 23-0 loss to visiting Frontier last Saturday at arguably the worst football field in the section — muddy, sloppy, soupy Max D. Lederer Field. The Wolverines lost last week to Lancaster, 17-0.
“They’re a tremendous group of athletes with some pretty big size,” Bronson said. “I was told by a spectator at the Niagara Falls-Lancaster game that it was the most physical game he’s seen this year. He was very impressed with the physical part of their game.”
Bronson said Lockport’s key to victory is better execution offensively.
“We definitely need to execute our offense and we need to make sure we don’t turn the ball over,” Bronson said. “Those were two issues that got us in trouble in the first 13 minutes of last week’s game. After that, it was pretty close, but we got into a bad hole and we had very poor field position.
“I thought our defense did a good job, considering the situations that they were put into,” Bronson said. “We need to be more consistent, recognize what people are doing to us and make quicker adjustments.”
