Reaching new heights

US&J Year End Part I

LOCKPORT —

It was an historic volleyball first for a city with an historic volleyball past.
Lockport High School’s boys volleyball team raised the bar in 2013, going undefeated in the Niagara Frontier League and going on to earn the school’s first-ever Section VI Class AA championship.
Head coach Joe Whalen’s senior-laden team and it’s exciting journey into new, unchartered territory has been selected as the Union-Sun & Journal’s runner-up local story of 2013.
A record seven players were named league all-stars after the Lions finished a program-best 25-4.
Senior libero Eamon Yates and junior hitters Brad Schneider and Jason Donorovich were named to the NFL’s First Team.
Unsung seniors Jack Whalen and Bryce Perry were named to the Second Team and seniors Shawn Moore and Jonah Ribbeck earned Third Team selections.
Among other top local sports stories in 2013, in January, opposing goalies in a federation Hockey League game are girls for the first time in history when Lockport’s Jillian Long stared across the ice at Niagara-Wheatfield’s Alexis Becker.
And there’s many changes to the face of Buffalo professional sports. To start the new year, the Bills fired Chan Gailey, then despite promising an “exhaustive search” for a new coach, quickly hired former Syracuse coach Doug Marrone to take over. In February, the Sabres would fire coach Lindy Ruff after 16 seasons.
Royalton-Hartland senior wrestling standout Drew Hull won the state 145-pound title at the state meet in Albany. And March Madness it truly was for a local son, John Beilein, who advanced triumphantly to the pinnacle of his sport and the game of his life.
Those are just some of the many local triumphs and tragedies from the past year.
Here’s a look at the first six months of the 2013 calendar year. The second half of the local sports year will be featured as well as the 2013 Local Sports Story of the Year in Wednesday’s New Year’s Day sports section of the US&J:
