— Lockport varsity football’s “Miracle at the Max” is named the Union-Sun & Journal’s Sports story of the year for 2012. The Lions trailed visiting Clarence, 27-0, in a Section VI Class AA playoff game, then bounced back to win, 42-35, in overtime. The Buffalo Bills fire head coach Chan Gailey after three losing seasons.
— Russell Brandon is promoted to Bills President and CEO by owner Ralph Wilson. Rory McIlroy is golf’s top money winner. Justin Rose is No. 2.

— Lockort’s Erin Miller, a Dean’s List student at the University at Buffalo, places first in the shot put event for the Lady Bulls at the Upstate Holiday Classic Indoor Track meet at RIT’s Gordon Field House in Rochester. The NHL strike continues. Brian Alt is a double winner for the Barker boys swim team in a 104-60 Niagara-Orleans League victory at Newfane.
— North Tonawanda senior Ian Gilhousen nets a game-high 16 points to spark the visiting Lumberjacks past the basketball Lions, 57-53. Brad Bobbitt cans a game-high 27 points to lead the visiting Roy-Hart Rams past the Medina Mustangs, 84-82, topping N-O boys hoops action.
— Two local young ladies make history when Lockport and Niagara-Wheatfield ice hockey teams square off at the Hyde Park Ive Arena in Niagara Falls. For the first time in Western New York boys varsity ice hockey history, a pair of female goalies squared off against each other. In goal for Lockport is Jillian Long and in goal for the Falcons is Alexis Becker.
