20 — Rumors in some circles have it that Sabres goalie Ryan Miller is on the trading block as the NHL’s trade deadline nears. NFL owners vote to get rid of the tuck rule and will increase fines and penalties on defenders using the crowns of the helmets to hit defenseless players.
21 — Steve Ott nets the winning shootout goal in the Sabres’ 5-4 win over the Maple Leafs at the FN Center. Head coach John Beilein’s Michigan Wolverines advance in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, beating South Dakota State, 71-56, in Auburn Hills, Mich.
22 — The Niagara University men’s hockey team bows to Canisius, 5-3, in the semifinals of the AHA playoffs. The Miami Heat extend their NBA winning streak to 25 games with a 103-89 win over the visiting Detroit Pistons.
23 — Thomas Vanek nets a pair of goals and Ryan Miller stops 39 shots in the Sabres’ 2-1 win at Montreal. Cardinal O’Hara hands Scholars Academy its first girls basketball loss of the season and advances to the Federation title game.
24 — Lockport senior guard Alexis Cheatham earns Niagara Frontier League girls basketball First Team honors. Lady Lions sophomore teammate Alyssa Wagner is named to the Second Team. Lockport Flips gymnast Jessica Moran brings home numerous ribbons and awards from the St. Patty’s Day Meet.
25 — Lockport junior swim star Derek Secord earns First Team Niagara Frontier League honors in four events. Also named NFL First Team all-stars from Lockport are Alexis Cheatham in girls basketball, Marshall Taylor, Kirk Feeney and Anthony Orefice in wrestling and Bridget Masiello in bowling.
26 — NFL all-star tight end Rob Gronkowski of the New England Patriots, a graduate of Williamsville North High School, pays a special visit to Lockport High School, where he gives his jersey away to special needs student Tawliq Baity. Rich Napoli announces that the Chestnut Meadows Retirees Golf League will meet soon at the Niagara County Golf Course to discus plans for the upcoming season.
