27 — Three Lockport Kids Wrestling Club grapplers, J.R. Leuer (8-Under), J.J. Lucinski (6-Under) and Steven Daskavitz (12-Under) take home first place trophies at the New York State Youth Wrestling Championships in Elmira. Charlie Croff nets 37 points to spark Groff’s Tavern over DiMillo’s Defense, 60-59, in a YMCA Men’s Basketball League contest.
28 — Wilson High School senior Lindsay Bryer is named Female Athlete of the Year by the Niagara Police Athletic League. For the second straight year, Lockport ice Lions player Ricky Eberhart is selected to compete in the prestigious Scotty Bowman Showcase at the First Niagara Center.
29 — Ransomville Speedway great Jipp Ortiz announces his retirement from racing. The underachieving Buffalo Sabres trade defenseman Jordan Leapold to the St. Louis Blues for a second round pick and a conditional fifth round selection.
30 — The Sabres blow a two-goal lead in losing to the Washington Capitals, 4-3, in a shootout. Syracuse defeats Kansas in the East regional Final to advance to the NCAA men’s basketball Final Four.
31 — The entire local Beilein clan is celebrating earnestly throughout the area as Newfane native John Beilein’s Michigan Wolverines secure a berth to the NCAA men’s basketball Final Four. Members of the championship Pot-O-Gold men’s hockey team are Brian McEachon, Seth Hamilton, Tom Castaldo, Rich LaTona, Pete Quirk, Paul “Bongo” Bailey, Joe Frischold, James Quirk, Ryan Neidrauer, Mike Licata, Tim McCullough and Sean Hayden.
1 — John Beilein’s sister, Molly Maigret says, “It’s in the genes” in describing her brother’s success as the men’s basketball head coach at Michigan, which is headed to the Final Four. About 60 friends and family from Western New York are planning a trip to Atlanta this weekend to watch this year’s men’s basketball Final Four in person. The Sabres deal Robyn Regier to the Los Angeles Kings for second round picks in 2014 and 15.
