Reaching new heights

US&J Year End Part I



2 — Members of the YMCA Stingrays swim team are Megan Mietlicki, Annemarie Aber, Megan Tatro, Gina Artieri, Katie Pollock, Sebastian Lasher, David Arlington, Mark Crocker, William Rahill, Aidan Morgan, Henry Murphy, Luke Menges, Gianna Fozzolari, Sam Murphy, Jimmy Sacco, Lyle Wagner, Lillian Masters, Jessica Sacco and Mason Sparks. Kevin Porter nets his first two goals of the season as the visiting Sabres beat the Penguins, 4-1.
3 — The Buffalo Sabres send Jason Pominville to the MInnesota Wild for two prospects and a first round draft pick in 2013 and a second round pick in 2014. Newfane 2000 graduate Jeremiah Kneeland is named the new men’s soccer head coach at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs.
4 — Local legend Nin Angelo, one of local television’s first bowling stars and one of his sports’ first great southpaws, passes away. Austin Speaker hurls a complete-game, one-hitter, leading Starpoint past Lockport, 4-1, in non-league high school baseball action. Bobby McKeown finishes 2-for-3 at the plate for head coach Tim Racey’s Spartans.
5 — Brian Flynn and Jochen Hecht net third period goals in Buffalo’s 4-2 win over the visiting Ottawa Senators. Brad Schnitker reminds everyone that the Lock City Slo-Pitch Softball League is looking for more players.
6 — It doesn’t get any better than this for local college basketball fans as Newfane native John Beilein’s Michigan Wolverines defeat Syracuse, 61-56, to advance to the NCAA men’s basketball finals against Louisville. The Buffalo Bisons win their third straight game, beating rival Rochester, 9-2.
7 — Ryan Miller stops 37 shots as the Sabres beat the visiting Devils, 3-2. Jimmie Johnson becomes the winningest active Sprint Cup driver with a victory at Martinsville.
8 — Louisville defeats Michigan, 82-76, in the NCAA men’s basketball championship game in Atlanta. Morgan Bedford smacks three hits, including a home run, sparking Newfane past visiting Barker, 15-5, in N-O softball action. Chris Cribbs plates Starpoint teammate Austin Speaker to highlight a three-run third inning in the Spartans’ 3-2 non-league baseball win over visiting Niagara-Wheatfield.
