Reaching new heights

US&J Year End Part I

9 — Syracuse native Colleen Byrne is the new head coach of the Lockport girls lacrosse team. Kelly Anderson belts three hits with a two-bagger and Alyssa Wagner adds two hits with  double, but it isn’t enough in Lockport’s 17-14 non-league softball loss to Sweet Home.
10 — Co-captains of the 2013 LHS boys tennis team are Bailey Reid and Jeremy Cogovan. Niagara University men’s basketball coach Joe Mihalich accepts the men’s basketball head coaching position at Hofstra University. Dan Graney announces that his canal-side Niagara-Orleans Country Club golf course in Middleport is open for the 2013 season.
11 — Among the key players featured on the Lockport varsity baseball team are Casey Domski, Charlie Sobieraski and Noah VanDenBosch. The Lions are coached by Steve Styrzo. Carl Kinyon rolls a 290-788 in the Lockport Classic League at Brad Angelo Lanes.
12 — Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers breaks a bone in his leg and will miss the rest of the NHL season. It’s a rebuilding year for head coach Julie Kwoka’s LHS Lady Lions softball team. Senior members of the team this spring are Maddie Steen, Shannon Krywcun, Kelly Anderson and Allie Cavagnaro.
13 — Jhonas Enroth makes 29 saves as the Sabres blank the visiting Flyers, 1-0. All-star pitcher R.A. Dickey wins his first game for the Blue Jays in a 3-2 win over the Royals.
14 — Adam Scott wins the Masters golf tournament in Augusta, Ga. It’s a second straight solid start for Jhonas Enroth in a 3-1 Sabres win over the visiting Lightning.
