Reaching new heights

US&J Year End Part I

29 — Lockport and Kenmore East softball teams compete in a special Strike Out Cancer game at LHS. Zach Arquette, Matthew DiTullio, Brennan Stevens and Garrett Srock combine to toss a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts, leading the Lockport Green Monsters U-12 select baseball team to a doubleheader sweep at Barker.
30 — A triple by Katie Shaw highlights a four-run, first inning as the Newfane Lady Panthers knock visiting Royalton-Hartland out of the Niagara-Orleans League’s unbeaten ranks with a 5-2 victory. Winning pitcher Alexis Moreland scatters six hits and Morgan Bedford belts two hits with a triple for the Lady Panthers (7-1 N-O).
1 — Lockport senior ace Casey Domski pitches and hits the baseball Lions past visiting Niagara Falls, 6-4, at Outwater Park, to maintain a first-place tie with Grand Island. Domski scatters five hits over 5 1/3 innings and goes 2-for-2 at the plate with three stolen bases. Junior Brad Wroblewski smacked a bases-clearing double for head coach Steve Styrzo’s Lions (7-1 NFL).
2 — Southpaw junior Brad Wroblewski hurls the Lions past visiting Grand Island, 3-1, to gain sole possession of first place in the NFL baseball standings at 8-1. Brett Cole (100, 200), Jacob Haight (long, triple), Bryce Moeller (110 hurdles, high jump) and Nick Israel (400 hurdles, pole vault) are double winners for Barker in a 115-24 boys track victory at Roy-Hart.
3 — LHS junior Bailey Reid earns his first varsity first singles victory in the Lions’ 3-2 victory at Kenmore East. Head coach Miles Patterson’s LHS boys and girls track teams are both 3-0 in the NFL. Lockport Umpires Association president Mike Stover is actively recruiting new umpires.
4 — Orb wins the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby. Barker defeats Newfane in N-O baseball, 12-3, but not before sophomore Nick O’Lay of the Panthers belts a long home run. David Ragan steals a last lap victory in Sunday’s NASCVAR Sprint Cup race at Talladega.
