Reaching new heights

US&J Year End Part I

5 — The Buffalo Sabres announce that they are sticking with Ron Rolston as their head coach for the 2013-14 NHL season. GM Darcy Regier says Rolston was the only candidate interviewed for the job, irking many Western New York Sabres fans.
6 — Tom Fawber’s 2007 interview with then rookie NASCAR driver David Ragan is recalled in a special feature story. Ragan was in at the AAA Headquarters in Williamsville six years ago to do a driver’s demionstration and Fawber was afforded an exclusive interview at the event.
7 — LHS senior pole vaulter Megan Evans sets a new school record with a leap of 10 feet, four inches in a Lady Lions track victory over visiting North Tonawanda at Max D. Lederer Field. Lions junior Josh Beshaw is a double winner, claiming both the 100 and 200 sprints.
8 — Buffalo Bills and National Football League Hall of Famers Jim Kelly and Thurman Thomas are at the Bewley Building in downtown Lockport to sign autographs as part of a fundraiser put together by the Niagara County Deputy Sheriff’s Dispatcher’s Association. Lockport’s Frank Mrowka takes pictures at the event for the US&J.
9 — Jordan Beutel homers and Jamie Kerwin adds a triple as head coach Katie Stedman’s Newfane Lady Panthers softball team defeated host Medina, 15-9, improving to a league best 10-1 in the Niagara-Orleans League. Pour Boyz on South Transit Road is hosting poker nights every Wednesday.
10 — Barker senior defensive specialist Jessica Hefferon signs a National Letter of Intent to attend Seton Hill on an academic and field hockey scholarship. Starpoint’s Austin Speaker hurls a complete-game victory on the mound and goes 5-for-5 at the plate, leading the Spartans past visiting Iroquois, 13-2, in ECIC baseball action.
11 — Lockport’s Lauren Wager and Wilson’s Tayler Thilk each receive $2,000 scholarships at the 48th Hewitt Sports Awards Banquet at Niagara County Community College.
