US&J Year End Part I



26 — Tony Kanaan wins the Indianapolis 500. Lyndonville native Scott Bradley wins the 30-34 age bracket at the Ironman 70.3 Florida competition in Haines City, Fla., near Orlando.
27 — Walt Ruta cards a 55 to earn the top spot in the Lockport Town & Country Club’s Memorial Weekend Golf Tournament. Bill Wincott is second and Dave Poole finishes third.
28 — Lockport’s Taylor Schaffert is named the Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year for the Brockport women’s swim team. Newfane shifts to Class C North and Barker/Roy-Hart moves up to Class B North in football this coming fall, Section VI announces. 
29 — The Starpoint Lady Spartans softball team claims the Section VI Class A-2 championship with a 5-0 victory over Iroquois in West Seneca. Ashley Owens and Allison Block combine to hurl the victory for head coach Joe Hill’s team. Brianna and Madison Clark each went 2-for-4 at the plate for Starpoint.
30 — Lockport bowling great Gary Kinyon proves he’s also a good golfer, acing the No. 4 North hole at Willowbrook. Kinyon used a 5-iron to ace the 150-yard shot. Witnesses were Anne Hopkins and Beth Fiedler.
31 — Members of the NFL champion LHS Lions baseball team are Dan Bronson, John Traversone, Kyle Waple, Colin Dougherty, Tyler Fraas, Bryce Perry, Brad Wroblewski, William Diebel, Charlie Sobieraski, Tyler Goodridge, Rhys VanBourgondien, Alex Licata, Alex Weaver, Noah VanDenBosch and Mike Bouchard. They were coached by Steve Styrzo.
1 — Reknown Lockport boxing gym owner and trainer Harry Gill earns a gold medal in the 80-to-84-year-old division in the National Veterans Golden Age Games in Buffalo. 
2 — Hamburg downs Starpoint, 4-2, in the Section VI Class A softball championship game in West Seneca. Starpoint coach Joe Hill’s Lady Spartans finished 18-4 overall with just one graduating senior on the roster.
3 — The Lockport Lions’ 400 relay foursome of Alex and Andy Reid, Nick Hamilton and Josh Beshaw win the Section VI championship in Yorkshire, setting a new VI record with a blazing time of 42.26 seconds. Teammate Dave Pollock is the pentathlon champion.
