14 — More than 10,000 fans show up at the First Niagara Center to watch the Buffalo Sabres scrimmage themselves.
15 — LHS senior Alexis Cheatham scores a game-high 24 points and teammate Johanna Jenkins adds 20 more in a 85-36 girls basketball win over visiting Kenmore East. Roy-Hart’s boys and Newfane’s girls swim teams clinch at least a tie for the N-O swim championship. Senior Omaro Luke nets 20 for the basketball Lions in a 63-39 win at Ken East.
16 — Roy-Hart’s Zach Bickle (132) earns a 41-second pin in the Rams 57-27 N-O mat win over visiting Albion. Alex Jensen (220) adds a 28-second pin moments later for head coach Kevin Lawson’s Rams (4-1 N-O).
17 — Nick DiNardo is a double winner in the 500 freestyle and 100 breaststroke as head coach Bruce Matthew’s Rams boys swim team clinches its seventh straight league championship. Cyclist Lance Armstrong admits to doping in a nationally-televised interview.
18 — Senior Jordan Beutel nets a game-high 19 points in a 42-33 Newfane win at Albion. Jamie Curry cans a game-high 21 in Wilson’s 65-40 win at Medina. With the victories, both the Lady Panthers and the Lakewomen remain tied for first place in N-O girls basketball at 6-0.
19 — Pitcher/infielder Casey Domski of Lockport is recruited to play baseball for Niagara County Community College. Sabres owner Terry Pegula apologizes for the recently-ended NHL Lockout.
20 — Thomas Vanek nets two goals and adds three assists as the Buffalo Sabres open the shortened 2013 NHL regular season with a 5-2 victory over visiting Philadelphia. Baltimore and San Francisco are headed to the Super Bowl. The Ravens upset the Patriots 28-13, in Foxborough, while the 49ers erase a 17-0 deficit in Atlanta to beat the Falcons 28-24.
21 — Lockport’s Megan Evans becomes the Lady Lions’ first-ever 11-foot pole vaulter at an indoor track meet in Fredonia. Evans now holds both the LHS indoor and outdoor girls pole vault records. Ryan Miller stops 34 shots in a 2-1 Sabres victory in Toronto. Buffalo is now 2-0 in the strike-shortened NHL season.
